    2. I'm new to online genealogy and have been overwhelmed trying to track down information about my great-grandfather, John Geddes, who was born in Newcastle, co. Down, in about 1867.? He married Elizabeth Georgina Parnell (yes, that Parnell, although I'm not sure of the connection) Neill, probably in the late 1880s, although I'm not sure where.? They lived in Belfast by the time they emigrated to America in 1923.? His father's name was Joseph Geddes, who was a coachman somewhere in Newcastle.? Joseph's wife's name was Eliza Jane Hall.? Emerald Ancestors has proved useless in tracking them down, so I would appreciate any information anyone could give me, especially of Joseph and his wife. Thanks. --Valerie Williamson ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. You've gotta check out free AOL Mail! - http://mail.aol.com

    3. Bev, being new to NIR genealogy research, I'm at a loss about Tithes and Griffiths. Could you pls explain or send me in the right direction. My ancestor James NEWALL was from Ballycastle, Down and left for Burntisland, Fife sometime before 6 Nov 1843 when he married Margaret SALMOND in Burntisland. I couldn't find him in the Scottish 1841 census. From your experience, where would you head next to try to find his family in Ballycastle. I've tried the old and faithful ways like Family Search. Thanks in advance for any advice. Dawn Williams, again. 1. Re: [NIR-DOWN] William Orr of Ballybeen
    2. Hugh Macartney
    3. There are two Ballybeens. One near Dundonald and the other near Comber. I think yours is the latter and the Ros Davioes web site will have a map showing its location. The Orrs were one of the early settlers in the Ards and members married into just about every common name in the area. Most Orrs were in the Ballykeel/Munlough and Ballyblack townlands. The genealogy of the family of James Orr of Ballyblack, drawn up from tombstone inscriptions was worked out by Gawin Orr of Castlereagh and I think is shown on p. 66 of the Montgomery Manuscripts (Rev. George Hill). As I recall Sir Hugh Montgomery's plantation began about May 1606 and before he left Braidstone, Scotland, had induced Col. David Boyd to take part and he bargained with Montgomery for 1000 acres in Greyabbey Parish. I have been told that the name Orr derives from the parish of the same name in Kircudbrightshire and there was MacGiolla Orr in Kintyre, especially Campbelltown. Other explanations of the name in gaelic have been suggested. Likely you have heard of James Orr, The Bard of Ballycarry, who was a United irishman and after the '79 rebellion fled to America but returned under pardon. Following the '79 skirmish in Newtownards the rebel, Andrew Orr was sentenced to 500 lashes but oped for military service abroad for the rest of his life. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Boyd" <mikejboyd@bigpond.com> To: <NIR-DOWN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2007 5:40 PM Subject: [NIR-DOWN] William Orr of Ballybeen > Do members of this list know where Ballybeen townland or Parish is please? > > William had a older Brother James Orr of Munlough (1655-1728) who married > Jane Campbell > > While William married Agnes Boyd (1670-1741) and they had 6 named children > which goes to the third generation. > > If you know this townland or the family of William Orr and Agnes Boyd, I > would like to hear from you please. > > Mike Boyd > Brisbane, Aust. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NIR-DOWN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [NIR-DOWN] MCKEE
    2. Roy: I, too, am researching the McKee family in County Down. I don't have too much to go on right now. My great-great grandfather, Nathaniel McKee, was born in 1786. He emigrated to the US in 1812. There were two Nathaniel McKees who were leaseholders in Ballybrian in the late 1700's to early 1800's. I think they might have been his father and grandfather. I would be interested in any information you turn up about the early records of the McKee family. -- Audry Rini

    3. Bev, Thanks so much for some lookups. I'm looking for one family. Specifically the wedding record of: John Boyd McCormick b. 28 FEB 1873 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland and his marriage to Sarah ? About 1894, likely in Belfast. I don't know if you can search in this way, as I don't know Sarah's last name. Also, the birth records of two of their children: William McCormick, b. abt 1895 and Minnie McCormick b. abt 1897 Both births likely in the Belfast area. The 1901 English census only lists "Ireland," but John's family was from Belfast. Slan, Andy

    3. Just to add to Bev's response........ The British Isles Vital Record Index Cd's from LDS turned up an interesting result. Entering Hassan, I put in the "h" Cd only to be told to put in the "a" surname Cd and low and behold there were the Hassan surnames and variants for births. As you will note 1865 is the starting point for the records and include one in Dublin and a couple in Donegal, but as Bev states it appears that Londonderry is probably one of few that has been transcribed as yet, but it does show that perhaps there are records in the wrong/or alternative spellings that were files phonetically perhaps with silent "h". The surnames are Hassan, Hasson, Hassin and Aussin, Ausen. Who knows why they are all under "a". and not "h". 2. Nan, Are there any records from St. John the Baptist, Ballygorian Beg? I know the records from Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Cabragh are with St. John the Evangelist Church but St. John the Evangelist Church didn't open until 1850. I've never got a satisfactory answer on where Catholics would have been baptized and/or married before 1850 if they lived in the Bryansford Rd area (but in Clonduff CP). A researcher did find my great grandparents' marriage record in Kilcoo Church but I'm not sure if my great grandfather was also from there since he was settled on Drumboniff townland by 1852.
