    2. Hi All! I took a break from the computer today (since its getting close to Christmas and I've done nothing except my research for weeks and I need to clear my head) When I got home I decided to follow up on some of the leads that you all were so helpful in getting me. The first thing I did was call the only "Creepy brother from the creepy family." This is what he said to me. "Why don't you just go outside and get some fresh air or do some Christmas shopping and forget all this nonsense" Well, I replied "Jack, you know who your parents were. You knew your brothers and sisters. Tom only knows Steve and he's never had any one to fill in the blanks for him." He got quiet and said "I don't know anything" I said "You were 10 or 11 when Tom came to live with you, surely you remember something! He said, "my mom babysat him every day, then one day, he just stayed and she never came to pick him up" I asked "Where did she meet your family?" and he said "My mother used to go to the corner bar and she met her there" He said "Maybe mom had a picture of her somewhere" Maybe when I get time, I can go through mom's old things" That was the extent of our conversation. Then I got the nerve to try the Joan R. Latty in Oregon (that was suggested from this board) and I called her up and her daughter answered. She was extremely nice and told me that her mother's name is Joan Roberts Latty. She said that they are Native American and that their name has been spelled Latty for several hundred years. She gave me her aunt's phone number and said she has done genealogy for a long time (and for their family) and to try her and see if she knows of any other Joan Latty's in the family. I struck out this time, but now am going to try the one in Santa Clara next. Again, thank you for all your support, wonderful comments and help! You all are angels. 3. Has anyone heard from Kathy concerning these last suggestions? It surely looks promising. ----- Original Message ----- From: Robt & Wendy Stevenson To: nir-down@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, December 07, 2007 11:56 AM Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] San Bernardino, CA Data Claire, this looks like the jack-pot. Coincidentally - and this seems far too simple - but I also sent Kathy a white pages listing for Joan R Lattie in Santa Clara, CA.....As soon as she mentioned Joan R instead of Rebecca Joan, the penny dropped! 3. Claire, this looks like the jack-pot. Coincidentally - and this seems far too simple - but I also sent Kathy a white pages listing for Joan R Lattie in Santa Clara, CA.....As soon as she mentioned Joan R instead of Rebecca Joan, the penny dropped! Given the 'family circumstance' it will be a very delicate issue to try to contact birth mum.... 3. Yes! I agree. This is very interesting. My sister adopted a baby in 1976 due to the mother who's name was SPENCE too!, not being able to care for her she put the girl up for adoption and her sister took the boy who was two years older. I wonder if there is an unhealthy connection with the SPENCE line...Leonie, Victoria, Australia. Is this not true? Put most simply there are two kinds of DNA test - yDNA which ONLY shows the male line and Mitchondrial DNA which ONLY shows the female line. So there is no way of proving, for example, your mother's father's line from anyone in your family. You would have to use a male member of your mother's brothers'(if any) families. Confused? Draw yourself a tree and look for the all male or all female lines. Those are the ones that can be researched via DNA at the moment. -- ==== Michael Lightfoot Canberra, Australia OPC Merther & St Clements, Cornwall see http://www.cornwall-opc.org michael.lightfoot@canb.auug.org.au ====

But these alternatives have probably been considered or suggested. Perhaps she didn't use her own name when the birth was registered. Good Luck with your searching.

    3. My biological father's mother's line is Freeman. I am searching for my biological father's father's line which is Drane. My GGrandfather's father is unknown to me although many of the Drane women claimed DAR status because of very flawed research done during the 40's. I am 67 and my GGrandfather was born in 1776 - how about that for a lot of men marrying really young women! I don't think I would believe it myself if I had not done the research and know it is true. My biological ggrandfather was 70 when my grandfather was born, my grandfather was in his late 50's when my father was born, and my father was 38 when I was born. Fortunately, I broke the chain, I was only 26 when my son was born. ----- Original Message ----- From: cristy To: michael.lightfoot@canb.auug.org.au ; nir-down@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2007 8:24 PM Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] NIR-DOWN/Have DNA Run How about your father's mother's line? 3. Sort of. Males have DNA testing done through the paternal line (i.e. if your name is Holley, only Holley males would test the same, so if you are a daughter Holley, you would need to get a brother or male descendent to test). However, there is also mitrocondial testing, which is done through the female line. It is not associated with surnames, as the females test, their mothers, and grandmotherss, etc. Wendy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Holleys" <ljholley@comcast.net> To: <nir-down@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2007 5:36 PM Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] NIR-DOWN/Have DNA Run >I was told that my son could have his DNA done to prove our Drane ancestry >because I was a woman and it needed to come down through only males. 3. I am the administrator of the British Isles DNA project. My opinion is that DNA testing can be a very useful adjunct to paper research, but will certainly never substitute for it. Those interested in pursuing this resource must be aware that there are limits to what it can offer. Since Y-DNA is passed only through the male line (father to son, to son to son, etc.) it can only be used to trace the paternal line (father to father to father to father, etc.). Since only males have Y-DNA, only males can be tested on Y-DNA, which can potentially help trace a surname. Mitochondrial DNA, meanwhile, is passed from mothers to both children, and is therefore used to trace the maternal line (mother to mother to mother to mother, etc.). Since both males and females inherit mtDNA, both may donate, and in both cases, it is only the mother's maternal line that is traced. Furthermore, since Y-DNA and mtDNA mutate at different rates, their utility for genealogical purposes is somewhat different. Y-DNA mutates relatively quickly, and can therefore potentially provide information about ancestors in genealogical time (i.e., in 100s to 1000s of years). mtDNA mutates more slowly, and is therefore more suited to tracing ancient ancestry (1000s to 10,000s of years). Please keep these thoughts in mind when considering the use of DNA as a genealogical aid. Roy in Montreal

    2. Kathy: After hearing your husband's story, it is my feeling that maybe you should take a break from the usual "stuff of genie research" and (as someone else suggested) have the DNA done. Not only is it enlightening to have it done, but it might give him a fresh look on the whole ancestry thing. It is very reasonable now to have the DNA testing done (about 5 companies in the U.S. are very good....and including the Genographic Project by the National Geographic people). There are some things in my family lineage that I just am never going to know for sure, but I left these things "simmer on the back burner." Relax, enjoy what is happening now....maybe your Tom has enough sketches from his past and that is that. At any rate, I don't recognize any of his surnames involved in the search. Wish I did.
