I suspect your ancestors came from Loughinisland parish. The Griffith's index on failteromhat.com shows 3 Patrick Tomans in that parish, as well as one Bernard. There are two Bernards in Drumgath parish as well. However, Loughinisland has lots of Savages and Drumgath doesn't have any. The records go back to 1806 but unfortunately haven't been filmed by the LDS. Diane
Patti, My great grandfather, William Mathers was of full age when he married my great grandmother in 1864. They had both lived in Tyrone before marriage. Later, in New York, the name evolved into Mathews. Both William and his father Thomas were shoe/bootmakers. Connection? All the best, Kevin **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)
Read with interest your recent post which mentioned an Isabella Matthews. I, too, am searching for ancestors who did not leave much information to track them with. Is it true they did this deliberately to avoid the Brits? At any rate, my g-g-grandfather, John Matthews, b. 1828, said he was from "No. Ireland" on the 1860 U.S. Census. His wife Isabella Toal was from Kirkcudbright, Scotland. Am trying to trace John MATTHEWS' family back as far as I can. Would love to visit the town where they originated in the near future. Any books or references on how the people lived at that time, specifically how they moved back and forth from Ireland to Scotland, what the society was like, etc. I know that John MATTHEWS was a shoemaker (and bootmaker). When they settled in Pittsburgh, a family by the name of Carnegie moved next to them and they became fast friends, according to the obit I recently discovered. Son, Andrew, it noted, always visited them in their home in Braddock, whenever he came to visit the area. Any ideas would be much appreciated! Happy New Year to all! Thanks to everyone for this info: I have some more information, but not much, about Bernard and Rose. Bernard was a linen weaver (as recorded on the wedding cert. of John) and had died, probably in Ireland, before 1888. Rose was born in 1831 and died in England. I am afraid I really don't know where they came from, other than that it was definitely Co Down. Since John married a Devlin from Newry it is possible that the families knew each other before they travelled but that is pure conjecture. Can someone tell me a little more about the sources you have quoted? The Griffiths valuation is described as being taken over a number of years. Is it possible to tell when a certain record was made, and also what was the basis for making a record, property ownership? tax liability? Would a working man like a linen weaver with possibly no assets have been recorded? The family was catholic, so if I wanted to follow up one of these leads you have given me, is it possible to access catholic BMD records online, or even in person? Thanks, Peter Peter J Meaney wrote: > Hi Peter > There is a Bernard McGuinness in Burrenreagh Kilcoo CP according to > Griffiths Valuation see > http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/down/kilcoo.htm > > Pete > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Sean McCartan > Sent: 28 December 2007 10:56 > To: nir-down@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] McGuinness search > > > In April 1847 a Bernard Magennis applied for house and land from the Meade > Estate. Hi Peter Any idea whereabouts in County Down?? Sheila
A happy Christmas to everyone. After managing to leave family history alone for a few days I've found some time to update my Ellis Island Co. Down Strays Pages. More updates are planned in the next few weeks. As always updates can be reached quickly via the 'latest updates' link on my homepage at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~meaneypj/index.htm or via the search engine which has also been updated. regards Pete Peterjmeaney@ntlworld.com <mailto:Peterjmeaney@ntlworld.com>

Hi I am new to this list and so I thought I would tell you what my interests are. Nicholas McAvoy married Ann Macken in 1845 in Kilkeel, Co Down (my 3x great grandparents), their children were: Patrick b1851 Catherine b1853 Ellen b1855 married Joshua Rooney at Egremont in 1880 (my 2x great grandparents) Nicholas b1858 Edward b1861 John b1864 Mary A b 1869 Bridget b 1870 On the 1871 English Census for Egremont, Cumberland it says that Ann is now a widow (Nicholas killed in a mining accident in 1870) and that all their children were born in Liverpool but I cannot find them on the 1861 Census anywhere in England. Also, Bridget was born after her father died in Cumberland. Joshua Rooney was born in Egremont, Cumberland in 1860 to James and Elizabeth nee Taylor, his siblings were: Leticia b 1850 in Ireland Rosanna Amanda b 1853 in Ireland Sarah Ellen b 1856 in Egremont James b 1858 d 1859 in Egremont Joshua b 1860 in Egremont James b 1862 in Egremont John b 1864 in Egremont Andrew Taylor Rooney in 1866 in Egremont All I know about James is that he belonged to an Orange Lodge but do not know where or when he joined. If anyone can help me further my research I will be eternally grateful. Wishing you all a very merry christmas and happy hunting in 2008. Regards Lin
