    3. Hello to all and hope everyone had a great christmas. I found my 3 x great grandfather Edward Hamilton b1829 on the County Downers in County Durham (England) 1891 strays list with his wife Mary Ann (both born in County Down). I have all their Census records in Durham, England but have never been able to trace him back to County Down and wondered if anyone had any further information on him. He has been my brickwall ever since I started my family research and would love to find more. He Married Mary Ann (probably Alexander, they both show in the freeBMD as marrying on this date) 16 Sep 1855 in County Durham and his 8 children were all born in County Durham, I believe his wife Mary Ann was born around 1833 in Larne although her date of birth fluctuates a great deal in the Census records. Kind Regards and best wishes to everyone for the New Year. 1. Re: [NIR-DOWN] Emerald ancestors
    2. Interesting. I have no idea if there is a connection, although it IS curious that in the passenger list I find Isabella Matthews coming over with her two children, James and Ellen, PLUS another child named "Thomas Matthews." Always wondered whatever happened to this child!!! He never appears anywhere else with her, so I thought perhaps he was a relative she brought over for someone else. My John Matthews had a brother George (I am guessing that was the relationship) who was a photographer in Pittsburgh (mid-1800's) and he was made guardian of John's children when their father died of malaria contracted in the Civil War. I know from the military records John was redheaded, fair complexion, blue eyes, 5 foot 7 inches tall. I have a photo of him. Does any of this sound like your family? Other than that, all I know is that the family was Presbyterian. Do you know where in Tyrone your family was from? Thanks for writing, Kevin! 3. The strays in question are those who have emigrated, or strayed, from their place of origin. The lists have an obvious utility for people whose ancestors moved around a lot, as is typical of many Irish. These are not official records and are generated and held by various individuals; to access Pete Meaney's Co Down strays, just follow the link he gave and browse around. To find others, google strays and the counties you are interested in. cheers, Peter TremontGdns@aol.com wrote: > Could someone please explain what a "strays list" is and how do we access it? > > Thanks, > Patti > > > ************************************** > See AOL's top rated recipes > (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004) > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NIR-DOWN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >

    3. Hi Looking for Ann LINDSAY c1800 married c1825 to John Keenan c1800... possibly from Rosstrevor, Kilbroney or Warrington in Co Down. No records of marriage or births of children anywhere in Co Down...Their children lived for a period of time in Tullylish, possibly town of Gilford or Laurencetown where a group of them married from late 1840's to 1850's. Thomas KEENAN b1831 m Cecilia McCAFFREY 1854; William KEENAN m Sarah THOMPSON 1850; Arthur KEENAN m Catherine Treanor 1853; John KEENAN m Elizabeth McCAFFREY c1854; Peter KEENAN m Ann QUINN c 1849; all at St John the Evangelist RC ...girls Ellen nver married and possibly Rose, Cis Margaret and Elizabeth most came to live in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland from 1857 and some then moved from Scotland to NY MA CT and IA in USA Trying to locate original townland or parish in Down as we are fairly certain they did not originate in Tullylish. Not remotely concerned with religion, but sense that unusual to see Lindsay surname as RC as experience shows that this is traditionally a Scots Presbyterian name or COI. Feel that this may be a clue as to Ann LINDSAY's home townland. If anyone knows these LINDSAYS please let me know. Any general ideas or suggestions to origins context of this period very welcome Thanks Paul T KEENAN Giffnock Scotland

This can be found on the Newry Street page or via the 'latest updates' link on my home page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~meaneypj/index.htm Unfortunately these inmates were only recorded by initials, but hopefully someone may recognise a missing ancestor. 1. [NIR-DOWN] SEARCHING FOR "LYNCHEY"and FOR MULLAN-EARLY 1800'S
    2. Peter Strauss
    3. Hi Listers, I am still trying to find any details of possibly Michael, possibly James LYNCHEY. Probably born in County Down late 1700's and who may have gone to the Isle of Man with his family in the 1820's. His wife, Sarah, was sentenced on the IoM along with a son Thomas in 1833 to be transported to OZZ. They went on separate ships, she took 2 daughters and a son with her. The Indent of convicts on the Mary III states that she was a widow, aged 50 years, born in County Down and Catholic. There is a "Dissenter Baptism on the IoM in 1826 with the parents a Michael LYNCHY and Sarah MULLAN, also the possible deaths in 1833 during a cholera outbreak on the IoM of her husband and a son. I have found on Ros Davie's site a reference to a conviction in County Down of" Lynchey, Straney & Mechan, for stealing timber the property of David Ker, Esq. of Montalto, to be burned in the hand". Could any lister link this LYNCHEY to the one I am looking for? I have not been able to find any LYNCHEY's, trying several spellings, in either the NI or the Republic White Pages on line. On the LDS site I have found 2 Sarah MULLANS born in Down during the mid 1780's. These are possible candidates to be my GG grandmother. Any assistance will be much appreciated. Cheers Peter Melbourne

    3. Peter Try the Library at Newry, Co Down - sorry do not have an Eamil address for it. They should be able to tell you the year of the Griffith Valuation for that area. And it if you think it is wotht it do a look up for you for any of your names. They should also be able to tell you what Catholic Church Records are available. In found in Counties Cork and Kerry that the Catholic Church had typed up their registers in to A-Z lists about 10 years ago. So not sure if the North did the same at that period. Every best wish for a happy, healthy and peaceful 2008! Often we get new researchers signing on to the LIST at the beginning of the year having made a resolution to track down that lost-lost ancestor. I know that will get a lot of help from you all. To any "newbies" that might have signed up we have some great sites to help you out. Lots of links can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nirdow2/ I will make a concerted effort to work on the BRICKWALL in the New Year as I know I have some outstanding requests: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nirdow2/brickwall.htm ### Good luck to you all in your research. It's amazing what we can achieve when we all help each other out. ### Fiona. IGP County Down Coordinator. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nirdow2/

    3. Peter Before 1850 weaving was mainly a cottage industry in County Down. Then with the introduction of factory machinery things changed overnight. A factory loom could do the work of 200 hand looms. This was just one factor in mass emigration. During this period all land in this region was owned by major landlords with tenants paying them rents. Registers, details of leases and correspondence have survived in landlord estate papers. This is where you may find much on the family you seek. In a letter dated around 1920, a Cornelius McGuiness, who was a direct descendant of Bernard. claimed to be the last of the clan. Cornelius was a character and is remembered by some old folk. -----Original Message----- From: nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter McGuinness Sent: Saturday, December 29, 2007 2:45 AM To: nir-down@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] McGuinness search Thanks to everyone for this info: I have some more information, but not much, about Bernard and Rose.
