Does anyone have an e-mail address for Ella Patterson? She works/worked at Queen's Univ. library in Belfast and often helped out with inquiries from the List. I checked the QU site but could not come up with her co-ordinates. Thanks. Owen Davey -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. It has removed 25 spam emails to date. Hi I am looking for someone who is researching the name (Crothers) and( Beatty) from Annahilt Regards Veneita
The name O'HAGAN is constantly turning up as I research my JENNINGS family in Newry and I do not know any reason for this. It seems that there must be a connection somewhere that I have failed to find. I know that Arthur O'HAGAN (d.1800) lived on North Street, Newry, as did my Andrew JENNINGS (d.1818)but this doesn't seem to be reason enough for the number of times I have come across baptisms with either O'HAGAN sponsors or vice versa. It it possible that they are connected in some way by marriage and I have failed to find the record? Both families married into the McCARTAN family, but again this does not seem to be a very strong connection. Charles Jennings (b.1837) a grandson of Andrew was apprenticed to Arthur O'HAGAN solicitor in Dublin so the connection still continued in later generations. If anyone is researching the O'HAGAN family could they tell me if they have come across the name JENNINGS, please? I suppose this is a sort of brickwall. Nicola Jennings
Don't know if anyone has tried to access the site today - but Brian has put up an explanation of what he is trying to achieve with the new site. All a bit technical for me - but some might understand it! Try logging on to _www.caora.net_ (http://www.caora.net) and you will see what I mean! Late Summer is a long way off - but it will be worth waiting for! Sheila
Thanks so much for the update, Sheila. Hello Everyone, Was someone on this list looking for information on Hyland Lodge Newcastle recently? If so, please contact me. I have, while looking for something else, found a "For Sale" notice in the Down Recorder newspaper (dated 6th November, 1943). It describes Hyland Lodge with a fair amount of detail (also its location). I can scan it and email it directly to the person interested, if they want to see it. Billy
Fiona, The name Ethelinda, written as that, just popped up, today while researching some New Zealand material. It was among some later 1800's names . Was not looking for it, just happened to notice as I scrolled downwards. Came across this site last night. No specific mention of Co. Down but lots of the surnames are "Down" names. e.g. 15 year old Bernard MARMION =================== 100,000 British Home Children (alleged orphans) were sent to Canada by over 50 British Child Care organizations. These 4-15 year old children worked as indentured farm labourers and domestic servants until they were 18 years old. The British Child Care organizations professed a dominant motive of providing these children with a better life than they would have had in Britain, but they had other ignoble and pecuniary motives. They rid themselves of an unwanted segment of their society and profited when they sold these children to Canadian farmers. Siblings in care in Britain were separated from their families and each other. Siblings were separated from each other when they were sent to Canada. Most never saw each other again. Many spent their lives trying to identify their parents and find their siblings and most were unsuccessful. An unknown number of children ran away from their indentured labour in Canada to the United States. Millions of Americans may be descended from British Home Children. The 4-5 million Canadian/American descendants of the British Home Children have 20 million British Grandparents, Uncles, and Aunts. How could this many people not know they are related to one another? Their mutual searches have been hampered by the unwillingness of the childcare organizations to readily release vital personal information. ======== http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~britishhomechildren/ Fiona. Just had a major BRICKWALL BLITZ..lots of new names added. Take a look and see if you can help anyone breakdown their brickwall. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nirdow2/brickwall.htm Also a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to our "secret" researcher who picks names from those listed and conducts some research at PRONI to help breakdown those BRICKWALLS. I know many of you on the LIST have had help. Fiona. IGP Co. Down Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~nirdow2/
Yes Billy - it was me. I would love to see what you have found. You can email me directly at mourneminers@optonline.net Perhaps I could also add it to the IGP Co. Down site? Compound names were frequently used in past centuries. In Ireland we commonly find Maryanna and Maryann, Marijane rather than Mary Jane and so on.
