Hi I am not even sure if this is a sensible question but I had this thought so will ask. I know my 3x gr grandfather James Rooney (or Roney) was buried in Egremont in 1880 when his age was given as 45. He is on the 61 and 71 census in Egremont, Cumberland when his birth place was given as Ireland, as were the births of his wife Elizabeth nee Taylor and his daughters Leticia and Rosannah in 1848 and 1850, his younger children being born in Egremont. There is a marriage for him and Elizabeth on the IGI for 1853 in Egremont and we have a solicitors letter dated 1953 that his daughters births were legitimised in January 1927 with the introduction of the Illegitimacy Act. I do know that within my Rooney family that I have just got in contact with, there is also his Orange Order sash that is now so faded that even if there had been any writing on it, it is now ileligable. As I am struggling to find his place of birth I am clutching at straws when I ask if there is any possibility of his Orange Lodge being in Cumberland? To compound my research he was obviously a Protestant, one of his daughters a devout Catholic and one of his sons was a Methodist. I am hoping sks can point me in the right direction as another question I have is, are the members lists for Orange Lodges of that period open to the public or are they still confidential? I have also put this on the google message board for Cumberland, although I do realize that I am clutching at straws. Thank you for your time. Regards Lin

Ann, I will have a look after the weekend, our time , I will be away for a few days. She may have been connected to the Finlay name, perhaps married one of them. However, Hamilton & English link to the Finlay family. I did not note it, I was so surprised to see the name just after I saw it on the Site. Would someone, please, be able to tell me where Lough Forth was or is located in Co. Down. I have been told the Johnston family who immigrated to the southwestern part of PA may be from there. Thank you, Linda Holley
I am also interested in the answer to this question, Lin, as I too have an old Orange Order Sash, the owner was also high up in the Masonic Lodge. And I also wonder where there may be information... Hi, Fellow Researchers, I'm looking for information for a friend of mine, Robert Hugh Skillen, who lives in Canada. He was born in County Down, Belfast, in the 1940s. He had two siblings, William and Ann. They were all orphans. Their father was Robert Cecil Skillen who worked in Boyce Brothers in Finaghy. Their mother was Mary Matilda Spence who lived in or around Woodstock Castlereagh Rd. Area; she worked in Foster Greens Hospital. They both would have been born around 1915. Both of Robert's siblings (William and Ann) have died and he has no one left in his family and is interested in finding out more info about his parents. He has no idea who his grandparents were. Any help, suggestions, would be very much appreciated! Thank you, Joni
Griffith's Valuations for Annahilt Parish 1863-4 lists six Johnstons, mainly at Cluntagh townland but Johnston is a common name all over Co. Down. No, you won't get it on line, only from PRONI. It has: Baptismal Index 1771-1845 Marriage Index 1772-1844 Burial Index 1771-1841 Vol.1 PRONI Ref. CRI/54/1 or T 679/44 Vol. 2 " CRI/54/2 The original documents are held by the rector, Rev. R. Hewitt, 3, The Trees, Donaghadee, New Road, Donaghadee, County Down. However I doubt he would have the time to search through 70 years of records and PRONI is where you should apply. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Holley" <ljholley@comcast.net> To: <nir-down@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 2:33 PM Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] Help! Can anyone tell me if PARKS and DARCY are common Irish Names? Thanks, Pat
Park is Scottish and Parkes English. Both are found in Ireland but are not native Irish names. D'Arcy is of French origin (Arcis - fortress dweller). Occasionally it can be a variant of the Irish name O'Dorchaudhe (Descendant of the dark one) but likely very rare. Since Ireland was invaded by the Anglo-Normans and the English in past centuries many of their names became common. ----- Original Message ----- From: "ppaws" <ppaws@netnet.net> To: "Irish" <NIR-DOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 10:41 AM Subject: [NIR-DOWN] PARKS DARCY > Can anyone tell me if PARKS and DARCY are common Irish Names? > Thanks, > Pat > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NIR-DOWN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

I don't know if anyone is interested in the America/U.S. vicinity, but there is a fairly distinct family of CARRs in the Rhode Island area from the 1600s/late into the 1700s/mid, and then they branched out up into New York, etc. etc. I think I still have some records regarding this name and my people (the BRIGGS clan) from the Rhode Island/Pennsylvania/New York areas. I read with interest the submission by Hugh McCartney and Nicola Jennings with regards to the CARR and ROWAN names, my great great Grandmother Jane McCulloch was born 1855 in Kirkmaiden by Drummore in Wigtonshire,Scotland... almost directly across the water from the Newonards Penninsula of Co. Down. Her parents were William MCCULLOCH (McCULLAGH) and MARY CARR who were from Ballywalter and Kirkcubbin respectively ... details obtained re this marriage are Marriage in Newtownards Registry Officer - 30 Oct 1847: William McCullagh, full age, bachelor from Ballywalter, labourer (father William, labourer) to Mary Kerr, full age, spinster from Ballywalter (father John, farmer). Witnesses: Ann Kerr and James Fisher. Interestingly her full name as per the Scottish birth certificate is JANE ROAN MCCULLOCH. Is it fair to assume this was a simple acknowledgment of the Irish patriot ...
Hi Rob&Wendy I am surprised that you felt the need to apologise for the illegitimacy , I have found over the period of my researching that in these hard times past when our ancestors had to struggle just to make a crust survival was the name of the game and if they survived then so did we, never frown or apologise for our past they were our survival, and be proud of it , and please do not take this as a slight upon your remarks remarks , Iknow you are as proud as we all are of our past and I also agree with you that those silent researchers are "pure dead brilliant " Alex On Jan 28, 2008 12:55 AM, Robt & Wendy Stevenson <stevensons@odyssey.on.ca> wrote: > What a lovely thought, and thank you for sharing.
