    1. [NIR-DOWN] Re Will Matthew Hunter
    2. maureenoc
    3. Dear Listers...Thank you Rosemary and Patrick for your comments to my query and also Nancy...sorry there isn't any Hunter connections in your Carse line. Matthew was a miller and he had a flax mill and corn mill in Ravara Killinchy. In his will he mentions all my freehold and chattel property in the townlands of Ballygowan and Ravara and any other property he has all being left to his life. Anna Orr was the executrix and it is recorded she was living with Matthew and his wife at the time the will was made out . According to the 1963 Griffiths Valuation his wife leased out 18 acres and a flax and corn mill. I obtained the full will from PRONI when I was there a couple of years ago. However looking at their website of wills I found the full abstract and I can see that Anna Orr had married in the 10 years it had taken for the will to be proved to James Carse of Killinchy. Effects of will 50 pounds. (I imagine this would not have taken into account the property value). I'm following this up as I would imagine Anna Orr would have been a relative and trying to find a connection with my Hunters. Thank you. Maureen

    3. Peter . Thanks for your work. You have done a wonderful job with your site. I found some Davey's in Northumberland who may belong to me. Owen Davey in Canada. Your lead to Dr. Moore's Ellis island site LED ME TO MY DAD. He apparently cleared customs in NYC as an landed immigrant. Sailed on the White Star SS Celtic, from Liverpool, landing in NYC on 26 April 1921. I had always thought he went out as crew but the documentation shows that he was processed as an immigrant. Supports an oral story in my family that he did go to the US but could not get my mother out. He stayed for a while then went back to the UK. A quite different sequel ensued. He was caught by the Great Depression in the UK, then WWII, only to come top Canada in 1953. We sailed from Liverpool on the CP line Empress of Scotland. ironically that was almost 32 yrs to the day that he first left the UK. Konwing my Dad he was well aware of the quasi anniversary. Our home was in Morecame, Lancs, not far from you. Regards. Would anyone give me some ideas as to why this was so...perhaps family squabbling? The executrix was an ANNA CARSE otherwise ORR wife of JAMES CARSE of Raffery Killinchy Co Down farmer. Anna and James are not known to me...would anyone on the list be researching this couple. Many thanks. Maureen

    2. Patrick McKenney
    3. Hello Maureen: I would have to agree with Rosemary about countryfolk postponing such unusual tasks. I spent days ging through all the McKenny wills in the probate court records at the PRONI several times over the years and noticed that if the value of the estate was minimal, there was usually a delay in proving the will. Or there were simialr delays in some cases were it appeared that the deceased died without children, husband, etc. and the executor wasn't a direct family memeber. Having said that, there was one case of a substantial estate where one of the heirs filed a dispute that required some time to resolve. If you look at the will calendar on line at the PRONI (http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/will_calendars/wills_search.htm), it will give you the value of the estate and that might give you a clue.
