I do have James DICKSON in my Family, in fact that is my maiden name. I don't know where North of Kates Bridge is in County Down. Born 1841 my James is from Loughbrickland, County Down. He married Jane Taylor abt. 1866. She was born in 1842, her parents were John Taylor and Jane Bingham (daughter of Ringham Bingham). I just through that in because I love that name.:) James DICKSON's father was Hugh DICKSON b. 1807, his grandfather was David DICKSON b 1777. James and Jane and 3 children immigrated in 1871 to Canada, and lived in USA for a short time, then went back to Canada. Don't see how we match but it is worth a try. E l a i n e J. Hi Kate, I have a copy, and Carol has said it all regards the book's content. It is dated 1998, and just in case the ISBN No. Carol was given was incorrect here is the one in the book. ISBN 0 901905 763 There is no Library of Congress number given. If you want any lookups from it just let me know. Regards to all, David in Newtownards, Co. Down In a message dated 10/03/2009 19:29:41 GMT Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Kate - Amazon.com has this title for 21.99 (ships in 1-3 months) - didn't see it anywhere else. Are you close to Auckland? There is a copy at the Auckland City Library according to a worldcat.org listing. I have 2 vol. in this series (1 & 7) and the information is pretty good, but the forward of each book notes that many stones have been destroyed or are illegible so that leaves burials before 1864 kind of hit or miss. The books are indexed by last name so that even if a person wasn't buried there but was mentioned on the stone the name would be in the book - very helpful for finding relatives. Eric - there apparently isn't a copy of this title in the library of congress - there are other volumes though. It's entirely possible that it is there but with the quick search it didn't show - I used the ISBN number from the amazon listing as well - no luck. You could try it with various boolean searches - http://catalog.loc.gov/ - is the online website. www.worldcat.org may help find a book in a library closer but the closest place I could find this title was in Melbourne or Wagga Wagga, Australia & Auckland, New Zealand! Thank you Rosemary for your suggestions and Patricia how kind of you to have a look for me in Emerald Ancestry. In the Down mailing list archives I can see there was some one years ago interested in the names of Orr and Carse..have sent them an email and it hasn't bounced back so maybe they could tell me of a connection. Is there a census for Dundela Ave in Down? Margaret
Hello Does anyone know, please, if it is possible to check if a birth, marriage or death for a particular name has been registered in Northern Ireland at any time since 1922, OTHER THAN by making a formal application for a Registrar's Certificate and paying the fee of GBP 10.00 or whatever? (This is to avoid spending money and Registrars staff time looking for a birth, marriage of death 'event' which may never have actually happened in Northern Ireland.) If I were doing this for a B,M,D 'event' in England and Wales, I could use the "St Catherine's House Indexes", whether at a LDS Family History Centre or a local archive but these Indexes don't of course include Northern Ireland. If I were attempting it in the Republic of Ireland, there is apparently a series of LDS films available for loan via their Family History Centres of Indexes to B,M,D , 1922-1959. However, the corresponding films of B,M,D *Northern* Ireland for 1922-1959 are marked in the LDS catalogue as "No circulation to family history centers", (presumably for copyright reasons). So, am I missing something? .. or is it just not possible to do what I want to do? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks. Brian
Hilary, If you go to the website http://www.lecalehistory.co.uk and check the "People Index" in both the "Griffiths Valuation 1863 - Lecale" and the "1901 Census of Ireland - Lecale" (covers South-East County Down) you can get details of some McGorians (and other spellings of the name) and where they were living in that area in 1863/1901. A quick look at these would suggest to me that Downpatrick is one area to be explored. Click on "Historical Resources" on the Home Page. I have Margaret McGorian born c1852 in Down and her father 's name as Stephen. Margaret was a Catholic (we think) and eventually married in Dublin in 1872 to Robert Barlow. I would be grateful for any info on the likely parish that Margaret was baptised in - and any info on McGorians from Down.
