Good Luck in your retirement. And a big thanx from all of us that you have helped over the years. May the rest of your days be the best of your days. Take care & have a great day. Dave in Canada
Before i knew anything about genealogy or computers,i started forgetting small things,so some members of my family advised me to see a doctor, which i did, he referred me to a psychiatrist, after a few tests the lady said she thought i had pre senile dementia, so i had to attend an out patients hospital twice a week.there they explained that loss of memory could be put down to a few things, i was involved in a serious car crash in my younger days, anyway attending the hospital was a young chap you lived near me, like myself he was on a war disablement pension,he having being blown up in a landrover while serving in Northern Ireland, me being in an incident while serving in Malaya, we formed a bond both being exservice, after about two years attending the hospital my pal John said he had got a computer and advised me to get one, no one showed him how to use the computer, he was completley self taught, his health condition was that he had never been in bed for years he slept in the armchair, so he had plenty of time to learn the computer, i got a computer then and he taught me what to do, my memory started improving and i started to trace my ancestors, my pal said i think i will build you a website, remember this is a man now in his fifties who still suffers from his injuries, bodily and mentally, (Jean McCarthy knows him), So he built the website and between us there was blood and tears in getting it started, he never put anything on the website as he is not interested in genealogy, so thats how it all started, two self educated eejits meeting in a pscho hospital, Raymond
Thanks so much for all your hard work, Raymond.? I usually try to respond to emails off link unless they contain genealogical tidbits. But I cannot do this regarding your announcement Raymond because your news was much more than a genealogical tidbit. You wrote the first response to my genealogy quest and I was in shock and awe when I received your list of O'Hares and especially of my Ballyagholy O'Hares. Later, when I was going into hospital to begin a year of three planned joint replacements, I couldn't help thinking "what if" and decided I wanted to get my current research out there somewhere and approached you, Raymond, who accepted it as is and I know the way it was written up was more than a copy paste effort to put on your site. . Nothing I had written was meant to be for publishing and there were several different pieces of information from several sources and times and programs, and computers combined "loosely" by a novice researcher and computer user. Through the years I have never passed by a Raymond post because I know that you would always be bringing something of interest and at times useable by me. Thank you for all you have done and welcome Margaret. I am looking forward to your posting tonight, Raymond. I wish you and Kathleen much happiness and contentment and years of deserved fun together. I will miss you but am sure you have chosen well in picking Margaret to carry on your work. Judy McKeon **************Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make meals for Under $10. Hi Raymond All the best for your retirement from (what must have been!) full time family research. Hope you have a successful and enjoyable time 'working for yourself' as it were for a change. There can't be many researching families in Down who haven't had some help from you over the years, as I have had myself - Griffiths lists for East Down 'names', for example. Good luck. Raymond, that's an amazing story and I'm sure an amazing friendship. It just goes to show you that sometimes when we go through "trials and tribulations" in our lives, that usually there is a silver lining at the end. We actually have to GO THROUGH it...not just stand at the edge and look in. You went through it, and because of that you had the (what I believe) is the Divine encounter with your friend. Had you not been in that hospital at that time you wouldn't have met him. You wouldn't have started the friendship that led to the computer that led to your research! Your research has helped so many people connect with people from their past...and people from the present. I for one have met my living relatives because of you. I have also met people like Sheila Phillips (who is an angel herself) and have brought my extended family close together because they enjoy hearing about my research and the people that I've met while doing it. You've opened up the world to me. You have helped fill in gaps of who I am because of finding my family. Everything happens for a reason....and I thank God that you followed the path that you did and allowed God to use you as such an important tool to help so many people. Thank you Raymond! What a wonderful story. One of the messages I take from it is the healing nature of the work that we all do on this site. I too am a "self educated eejit" and learned in my late-middle age how to set up my site from a young man who is the son of a dear friend. I have been at it, not as long as you, but pretty steadily since 2003 and it is the thing I most love to do (aside from time with friends and family). Thank you for all the work on your site. I use it often. Thanks also to to those who will continue to carry the torch of the flame that you began. Thousands will continue to be grateful. Always.
