Robyn, The indices themselves were alphabetical and ran straight from when they began (1845 for non catholic marriages and 1864 for everything else) up to 1878. Each reference had a volume number and that volume number told the clerks which time of the year the event took place in- each year being divided into four quarters. There were something like 20 volumes in all. The country was broken down into we'll say five major districts - say something liek the fact that we have four provinces and each district was subdivided - it's the names of these subdivisions that you'll see mentioned anywhere there is talf of 'districts' so please don't allow my using that term for the five major ones confuse you. I'm trying to explain how the volume numbers work so that from this, you'll understand why I'd guess at one of these films here being the one you'd need - I hav to guess 'cos I've never seen an LDS film, I've ony ever worked with the way it is in Ireland - hard copy indices. So, we had twenty volumes, for each event - births, marriages and deaths. Any volume for any event covered a particular period. Say for example the particular registration district that you are interested in was part of the greater 'area or district' covered in Volume 1 then that volume cotained all registrations for that event for all the 'districts' in that area for the first three months of any year. Volume 1, covered all births in Area 1 for the months of January, February and March. WIth five major districts and 20 volumes and twelve months, then wach major area had four volumes associated with it over any year. It wasn't that volumes, 1, 2, 3, and 4 covered one district...........instead I'll use the Civil Registration District of Londonderry as my example here. Londonderry is covered by Volumes 2, 7, 12 and 17 - that is every fifth volume of the twenty has reference for Londonderry registered births, marriages or deaths depending on which index you are looking at. The index is alphabetical. Volume 2 contains all references for any year for Londonderry. The pages of the records are in order of when the event occurred - it doesn't matter what the name, just that it occurred at that time. Sorry, I began this by trying to explain the way volumes are organised and now, I've just realised that the answer for you is probably with the page number, because the LDS have broken this volume up into two parts. Within each volume, there seems to be a similarity of page numbers for particular districts. So - lets look at the page numbers for individual districts nad see if that's any use. Londonderry any references I have for births - the lowest page number is 149 and the highest is 239 Deaths 127 to 206 Marriages: 137 to mid 200's Coleraine - we're in the 400-500's Limavady or Magherafelt the thousands when it comes to post 1864 references Other places associated with Co. Derry........... Ballymoney seems to be mid 100's to 200's - maybe lower and MAgherafelt the 400-500's bracket again. I'm learning something here! Now, if you're looking for a reference that has a page number as 207, based on all of the above, my guess is that the LDS have broken up the film as per the pages and from this it looks like your 207 should be on that first volume Births June v. 2-1 1902 FHL BRITISH Film 257923. Maybe someone who has experience of using the LDS films might be able to comment on this? Hope I just haven't ended up just confusing you more!! If I find out that the answer is any different than I think it may be then I'll let you know Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robyn Paterson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 30, 2003 2:03 AM Subject: [Derry] WHICH FILM WOULD IT BE ON > Hi, > I have found a birth record which is in June Quarter 1902 vol 2 page 207 > Lds have two films any ideas on how i can work out which one this record > will be on?? > > Births June v. 2-2 1902 FHL BRITISH Film 257924 > Births June v. 2-1 1902 FHL BRITISH Film 257923
