I am so excited to get yet another kernel of info. Just got a copy of Mitchell's Irish Passenger Lists 1847-1871. I had known that my ggf, Thomas Gormley was "from Derry." Have his intent to become a citizen which lists him as emigrating to New Orleans from Derry 31 Dec 1852. He moved on to KY and fought in CSA Army as one of Morgan's Raiders. This I knew. What I found in the Mitchell book is the manifest of the ship, the Mary Ann (J & J Cooke) for that trip. My Thomas Gormley is on it. He listed his address as "Park." Now I am in the dark. I know that the Gormley name is found around Raphoe, Donegal and into Derry. Cannot find "Park " on any map that I have. Can anyone help, please? Sharon D'Anna Annapolis
Sharon Park is etween Claudy and Dungiven, Try Ordnance Survey Discovery Series Map 7. They are available by mail order if you can't find a stockist. www.elstead.co.uk is one I have used and found reliable. You will be looking for other leads to follow. Local to Park is Learmount which was home to the Beresford family. I haven't done any research in this area but it might be worth looking for rent rolls or estate records. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland series gives a lot of background info You need the volume for West Londonderry Vol 28. I flipped through it just now and found 'The name O'Gormely is very frequent in Stranagalwilly..' None of these books is indexed. There are a lot of Gormleys in the Claudy area and just over the border between Tyrone and Derry. I went to school with some of them.
