Hi Virginia Many doctors from the north-west of Ireland qualified in medicine at Glasgow University or at Edinburgh. Among the Mitchell's from the Glendermott valley, I know of one (b. 1788) who trained in Dublin (and in the Royal Navy). There were several others from the Londonderry and Tyrone area who studied at Glasgow or Edinburgh. To put it another way, I have followed up on all the Irish-born Mitchell's who studied medicine at Glasgow University in the 19th century. All of them came from (or were connected to) Glendermott parish, just a few miles south-east of Londonderry. Glasgow University alumni or archive staff were most understanding and most helpful. Please contact me off list for a name and address if you wish, but their website may be more up to date.
