Hello List: Background to Genealogy Question: Historical Note on Clondermott Parish: The Parish of Clondermott is based on the ancient territory of the Clan-Diarmata, [from whence we get the name] a Sept of the Cenel Eoghain on the East side of the River Foyle. "These were the O'Carolans, and O'Cairellain was their Chief" part of the overall MacLochlainn Sept based in Ensihowen [from which we derive the Macklin name in 1601]. Subsequent to the Battle of Camerige in 1241 AD [Refer Battle of Camerige notes] the O'Donnells [from Donegal with the help of the O'Neills from Armagh] drove them out of their "henege lands" in MaghIthe on the west side of the River Foyle [Environs of Moville - Enishowen Peninsula] and they evidently re-established themselves on the east side of the river. The name of the Parish, and of the townland of the same name, like so many others in Ireland, is derived from the name of the Clan. As a side note, the "henege lands" of the MacLochlainns held for over 2000 years were handed over the the nerdowell Doherty crew from the Shannon Valley. The Dohertys were vassals to the O'Donnells who in turn were vassals to the O'Neills at the time and probably still are. Their "flight" some 350 years later was sweet to say the very least. OK having said that as the premise, the question then is this: Where was/is this "MaghIthe" territory in Co Donegal? [Should the land in question be spelled "maghithe" and what is the etymology of the Gaelic meaning here? Eric Toronto
