If you eventually find where your relatives came from in Ireland..would a letter to a church in that town ( if that is where they really came from) asking for birth records and marriage records --would they actually have someone that would look these things up? Has anyone ever done this? Also has anyone ever tried writing letters to people with the same last name in the town in which you feel your relatives came from? Any answers back? How do you go about getting a stamp for a SSAE to put in a letter to Ireland, so you can have them answer back. I called the local Post office and they had no idea on what to do? Thanks in advance. Hi Patti The churches will not respond and if they did they'd refer you to their archives division. They will only reply if you can pin point the actual Parish Registry [death - birth etc] in question. In other words you have to do 90% of the work before you contact them. As for contacting the local family members make you letter very short and to the point and include your e-mail address. Even with an enclosed stamp your response level should be in the 5% to 10% area. Remember it is the people who don't live in Ireland that are interested in genealogy. Happy hunting. Pattii . I have sent leters to churches and people of the same name , included a stamped address envelope and in the case of churches included money for their building fund and never received an answer . You can buy stamps of different countries from Genealogy societies and Stamp dealers .
