Do you have my Stewart's born "Ireland" in any of your records? . John Stewart b.Abt 1835, his bro David Stewart b.28 Dec 1840, and their sister Margaret Stewart b.7 Apr 1847/1850.? They were all in the US by 1855, and I have exhausted all the records in the US, and have all of their descendants. All the records we need will be in Ireland. We have had the Stewart DNA done at www.familytreeDNA.com . Thank you so much. Laurie, In US we have to buy coupons at Post Office to send to a foreign country and they in turn buy their stamp/s for return reply. Jean ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Pattii . I have sent leters to churches and people of the same name , included a stamped address envelope and in the case of churches included money for their building fund and never received an answer . Hi Patti The churches will not respond and if they did they'd refer you to their archives division. They will only reply if you can pin point the actual Parish Registry [death - birth etc] in question. In other words you have to do 90% of the work before you contact them. As for contacting the local family members make you letter very short and to the point and include your e-mail address. Even with an enclosed stamp your response level should be in the 5% to 10% area. Remember it is the people who don't live in Ireland that are interested in genealogy. Happy hunting. Some clergy do answer letters, some pass them on for someone else to answer and some don't bother. If it is a fairly uncommon surname it's worth a try writing a letter to others in the area. I have done so in the past and relatives have contacted me. If sending a letter overseas get International Reply coupons from your local post office (they should know this). However, nowadays so many people use e-mail I usually send a letter and include phone number and e-mail address (except in the case of elderly people who might not use computers). Note: you mentioned towns- unless your Irish relatives lived in a city or town it is a townland you need to know. Unfortunately postal addresses do not include the townland which can make it difficult to locate a place if you don't know the area. Friends: I was successful in finding and navigating OSNI Map site. As with many powerful sites, I had to learn their particular "click and dble click" methods. If I ever need a detailed map of one particular place, I probably would return and purchase a map. Today, I just wanted to experience the site. Good Luck Dick "Daniel Boone" Stewart
Rachel, I also wrote telling them there were too many hoops to jump through and one page I did get was blank. Jean ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
OSNI (Ordnance Survey for N Ireland) had a full page ad in Ancestors magazine this week which said, amongst other things, you could view historical maps down to the level of a farmstead. Now this would be a first and amazing to get good NI maps on line. I didn't find the site to be very user friendly and when I eventually found the Historical maps I couldn't view them. You need Java enabled and I have this. I emailed OSNI about my difficulty connecting and their reply didn't help- just that I needed Java. Could someone with a more technical brain than mine try it and see if they get a result. It could be a great resource and one I'd really like to work www.osni.gov.uk Rachel

Joan: I have checked my records for St. John Roman Catholic Church at Granahan, Parish of Killelagh, County Derry, and find there are 70 persons named Bradley buried in the cemetery, 55 persons named McEldowney, and 3 persons named McIldowney. I have listed below the Bradley and McEldowney persons who have the name Gortinure or Gortanure on their tombstone. Many of the persons named Bradley and McEldowney who are buried in the cemetery do not have the places where they lived on the tombstone. My immigrant ancestors are James Diamond ( 1784 / 1851) and his wife, Jane McEldowney (1794 / 866) from County Derry. I believe they were members of the above church. They arrived in New York in 1826, and settled in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. I have one person named Bradley who has the name Gortiure on his tombstone.
