We had a Breadman,Milkman,Fruit and Vegie man,a Fish man,a "brock" man,[he collected food scraps - brock - to feed his pigs] and a rag and bone man, who gave you a clay pipe for a bundle of rags[Elderly people used them to smoke tobacca. They only cost a penny, were made of white unglazed clay and didn't last long.but at a penny a time were easily replaced.]We used them to blow bubbles !! Hi Thanks to David I've narrowed my search down to two Townships,BALLEYWELLAN ( balleywillin) and TAMLAGHT O'CRILLY for the possible areas where my gr.gr.grandparents James NEVIN and Catherine OWENS came from. The LDS film number for those two townships is 597160,which I intend to send for at my local FHC. Hoping to connect with others researching the above names. Regards Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada.
I would be interested in having a lookup done for the 1831 census for McVey/McVay of Artrea. Thank you. Peggy
Robert, Thank you in advance for your kind offer. I was looking for information on a John BOYLE (mother's ms may be Kelly, first name Susan. and Jane KEAN (KANE) parents are John KEAN and Margaret MCEWAN. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Elaine new e-mail address: [email protected]
aren't obsolete, Betsy.............. the glass milk bottle is though! In Dublin, I have a milkman - he delivers every morn - then there's my veg man.........with eggs Jane ;-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betsy Harper" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2003 5:24 AM Subject: Re: [Derry] Occupation and trades > A bread server was a man who went from door to door with a horse and "bread > cart" selling bread and cakes.Later tears it was a van and now of course > they are obsolete, like milkmen!
Hi David.......if time allows I would be grateful for a look up on JOHN HENDERSON . Many thanks. Honorah
Thank you for the information on "bread server" , I thought it was a "waiter". Makes sense. Years ago in Wisconsin (U.S.), we had the Omar man, and numerous other "house to house" deliveries" . Those were great days, we even had a farmer, who came into the city, to sell "fresh eggs". With progress you get computers and lose the "delivery persons" Lois W.
Hi I've just heard from a friend that someone on this list has the Index for the 1831 census of Derry. My gr.gr.grandparents James NIVEN and Catherine Niven ,ms OWENS were born in DERRY about 1810 according to the 1881 census of Glasgow They left for Glasgow Scotland in 1852,that's when my gr.grandmother was 'Born at Sea' according to the 1881 census of Glasgow.Probably on the ferry to Scotland. I would appreciate very much a lookup for James and Catherine if it's at all possible. Thank you, Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada.
Kathy, Haven't run into any Cassidys but several McLaughlins as I said. Never been there but hope to go someday. There are Gillilands in Culmore, north of Derry but I haven't been able to make the connection. My ancestors in Tully experienced quite a few deaths 1800-1810 and then I think a lease ran out. (Their landlord was Lord Londonderry) Anyway most had emigrated by the middle of the Nineteenth Century. Let me know about your trip and if you get to ask about Gillilands in Tully I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Tom Gilliland
I noticed you have relatives from Faughenvale. My Grandfather Joseph SCOBY and Grandmother Elizabeth MOORE were married in the Faughenvale Presbyterian Church on June 23, 1885. If you have any info about them I would appreciate it. Thanks. They immigrated to Darlington, Beaver County, Pennsylvania and I'm also interested in other families from Derry who ended up in Beaver County. I do happen to have a couple of McLaughlins (Mark and Patt) in Tully if you are interested. Tom, I have Cassidys like crazy in Faughanvale. I have several McLaughlins, although I have not researched this name a great deal. I have no Gillilands or alternate spellings. Have you ever been there? Hello David Would you please check the 1831 census CD for the names McGarvey and McWilliams. I believe they are from the Londonerry area of Lissan Parish. The given names for McGarvey would be James, Matthew, William, Robert. I am not sure of McWilliams as I only have a marriage of Catherine McWilliams to a McGarvey. Other spelling of McGarvey is M'Garvy, McGarvy, Garvey.
