    3. I also have a GALBRAITH, Robert...born 1811 in Ireland. I found a record of a Robert Galbraith born 1881 in Derry, father John, and since my Robert, who went to Scotland, named his first John, I think there is a chance it is him. Anyway, I would love to connect with someone researching Galbraith from Derry. 3. Dear Lisa, I have a CANNING connection. My grandfather was John Canning CORSCADEN, born Londonderry 1849. I understand he was named as his mother's sister Margaret [nee GALLAGHER] was married to Rev John CANNING [died Malin 1877] I would be interested to compare notes if you recognise this couple Mary Mary Herbert [email protected] snail mail to "Slimbridge" Bedgerebong NSW 2871 -------Original Message------- From: [email protected] Date: Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:58:34 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Derry] Canning Hello, I am new to this mailing list. 3. David They would almost certainly have sailed from Derry. Magilligan is also a possibility. There were ships sailing from there at the time - mostly run by merchants in the city. One of them was a Dysart. You can see the ads in the Belfast Newsletter. The University of S Louisiana indexed it up to 1800. http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/bnl/Main.html It is not always easy to get the full story from these extracts but they give a flavour of the times and if one of the Adams turns out to be yours, then I believe some large American libraries have microfilm of the original. The Derry Journal was in print from 1770? and may have items more local to Derry. As far as I know it has only been indexed for a short period 1770-75? from memory. However you won't find passenger lists unless you are extremely lucky. No one was required to keep them. The American colonies were part of the British possessions (for a while) and you needed no pass to travel within the lands your country owned, if you were a British national. Since there was no law requiring passenger lists, no-one kept them. If you were German or some other nationality then you did need to be listed. As to prisoners, I assume this was during the Revolutionary War. I know that some were held on prison ships, but if they were prisoners who were tried , there should be a record in the Public Record office - currently being renamed National Archives- in Kew, London http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/ They also have very good leaflets which might give you further avenues to explore. http://www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/Riindex.asp#A There is one on the American revolution and one on prisoners of War which looks interesting. Finally church records are a possibility although not much exists before 1800. I'm assuming they were Church of Ireland or Presbyterian. The most likely church is Drumachose. I have looked at those records in PRONI and didn't make a note as to how far back they went. Rachel > I'm starting the search for my ADAMS line that came from Newton >

    3. Hi Listers, I'm starting the search for my ADAMS line that came from Newton Limavady, county Darre (along the river Roe) in 1776. Needless to say, researching on the other side of the 'Big Pond' is all new to me. To date, I have not been able to find any ships sailing from the above city/town so the question is: Where (what port) would three brothers (James, Samuel & John ADAMS) living in Newtown Limavady and wish to travel to the 'colonies' (NJ particularly) go to catch a ship? Also, two of the brothers (Samuel & John) where captured by the Brits and 'deported' back to England/Ireland <?>...where would 'POWs' be sent by the Brits? Is there a listing of persons captured by them? Any additional information that any one thinks I should be aware of in this search would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, David E. Eaton, Sr., MM, MPS [email protected] ==== If you have integrity, nothing else matters; If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters.

Thank you for looking, even if you don't find anything. Judy, in NC
