Elizabeth a couple of possibilities:- a minor placename in Lavey (Termoneeny) parish or possibly Corick in Ballynascreen parish. Henry is quite common in Lavey parish. http://www.lmi.utvinternet.com/ Did the IGI give the registrar's district? Janet, our Eliza Beattie of Ballymena married Robert S. Brolly 6 Jul 1847. He was said to have been from the Coleraine area. Any connection to your John? Rachel, Is the above book a listing of all people in Derry or more like Pigots Directories? Hate to buy it and then find that labourers aren't included :) Thanks
I am unable to find "www.ulsterbooks.com" to look for the Derry Almanac and Directory, 1871. I do find "www.booksulster.com" but they do not list the above publication. Can you give any more information? I'd like to get a copy of this book! Thanks, Susi Godfrey

only include gentry & merchants and traders - never labourers Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 23, 2003 10:43 PM Subject: Re: [Derry] Derry Almanac & Directory 1871 > Rachel, > > Is the above book a listing of all people in Derry or more like Pigots > Directories?
It has all the usual names of gentry, clergy , officials, lawyers, professions, church people plus tradesmen and shops and businesses. Like Slaters or Piggots. It also has a calendar and hints on gardening. A section on stamp duty and oddball stuff. But it has the names of all the householders living in Derry city and Waterside listed by street- although it doesn't give a house number. Maybe they didn't exit then. Nothing is alphabetical and the print is not brilliant as it is a facsimile. There are 18 pages of names of residents in Derry. The other towns have a more cursory entry and no street by street listing. It has an amazing amount of general inf- it just takes some finding. I like it the fact that it covers Tyrone and Donegal too- although not in as much detail. Hi Dave, seen your offer of lookups, could you possibly tell me if theres anything for the following. Daniel Galbraith & Matilda Donaghey born December 1865 & November 1865 born in glendermott. They were married but sorry dont know when and had a daughter Joeina chapman galbraith Born 11/02/1893 my grandmother. Possible address is 53 Dungiven Road as thats the address on my grandmothers birth cert. Cheers Robyn New Zealand
If any one has acess to census for ireland could they look up the following.
I gave the wrong URL for the Derry Almanac. It should be www.booksulster.com I should also have said it usefully covers a lot of the county of Derry, Donegal and Tyrone. And remembering what happened the last time I innocently recommended a book, I can categorically state I have no financial nor any other interest in the company producing this one. Rachel Rachel
Robyn You could try getting your ancestors marriage cert. GRO will search within a span of years. Ideally you need the location and date. www.groni.gov.uk . This may not be strictly within the bounds of what GRO offer but you could try asking for the certs of any children born to this couple. When I got my grandmother's birth cert they phoned me to say there were some siblings I wasn't aware of.. I have a facsimile 'Derry Almanac and Directory,1871' It is not indexed of course and the print is tiring ( much as I love old books I wish they'd reproduce these things on CD ROM) There is a John Galbraith in Fountain Hill- the Waterside side of the Foyle. No Glbraith in Dungiven Road. If anyone is interested in the book it is available from www.ulsterbooks.com ISBN0-9543063-3-3. This is indeed a helpful and most unusual RC site. Thanks so much for bringing it to our attention. I've been dealing for years with the other RC chapels/parishes around Maghera, generally with results varying from reluctant or minimal cooperation to rigidly resistance, and occasionally to obstruction and just plain rudeness. I truly don't understand the Parish Priests who obstruct our research so adamantly, when it helps us understand the religious lives of our families and their connection to the Church, something you'd think they'd want to happen. This site is a wonderful example of how a parish can and should help.
Robyn Not sure what period you are interested in but you probably are aware only a few extracts of censuses exist before 1901. That is available on microfilm in PRONI and probably available in a Family History Centre (LDS church) if you have one near you. I know it has been indexed in book form but don't know whether the index is available on line. Certainly most other countries make a charge- English census on PRO is an example. If you are interested in the 1831 extracts that survive then that is available on CD.
