Hi Listers, I have joined the list temporarily again to tell you all that I just finished transcribing the public hospital records for New Orleans for March and April 1851. Each time I finish two months and post them, I will write again to remind you of this great resource for tracing your Irish ancestors to the US. I am writing to all the Irish county lists, so if you get multiple copies of this message, forgive me - just skip down below where I have copied all the names in the records from the particular county. In the past, I wrote to suggest that anyone researching their Irish roots should check these records of Charity Hospital in New Orleans. About 85% of the admissions were Irish, sometimes right off the boat thanks to a shipboard epidemic. During the late 1840s and early 1850s, the Irish poured into New Orleans by the tens of thousands - some to settle there permanently and many to travel to points further north up the river. I suggest you check our records, especially if your Irish ancestors settled in St. Louis, Louisville, Cincinnati, or Iowa. As I have said before, the public hospital records are better than the census because of the information they give - the person's place of birth, how long he had been in New Orleans, where he had been before arriving in NO, etc. They are more hit and miss than the census records, but I have been contacted by several people who have successfully located their ancestors in these records. Here is the list of the patients from Co. Derry admitted to Charity Hospital for March and April 1851. HI List I am searching for Data on David Steen who was in Balteagh Parish, Terrydremont in the i831 census. There were two sons and six daughters in the house at that time.In the Griffithe Valuation of 1848/1864 I found a David Steen and probably a brother living in the same Parish and location as the 1831 census. I am trying to tie in the two brothers and the 1831 census together. I have my great Grandfather David Steen living in Baltimore in 1857. I need to tie this whole thing together. Can anyone out there HELP!!!. Would sure appreciate any help t all or at least some direction to go Thanks Guys Warren Fisher
Phyllis, Thanks for the offer. I am researching GODFREY surname. County Derry, Ballyscullion Parish, Ballymacombs town. As I recall, you had some births about 1845 and at that time period my greatgrandfather JOHN B. would have been born. However, I'll take any GODFREY births you find, not just his. Thanks a lot! Susi Godfrey
Dear David If you are still doing look-ups I would be very grateful for my brickwall one John TENENT (var spellings of course) whose son (of the same name) married in Glasgow in 1839 but said he was born in "Londonderry". Any clues would be helpful. Regards Ann in New Zealand
Hello Sandra, In answer to your questions: The Parishes of Dungiven, Bovevagh, Balteagh and Drumachose are all gathered together in the same area of North Londonderry. Taking Balteagh as the centre we are talking about a 10 mile radius. Drumachose would be better known as the district of Limavady as opposed to the district of Dungiven but the two towns are close together. As regards Downs/Downes. In the same valuations only two families are found: 1826 Andrew Downs Drummond Drumachose 1828 Joseph Downs Terrydoo Walker Balteagh In the later valuation of 1860 I found: John Downs Carran Drumachose Joseph Downes Ballynahery Drumachose Alexander Downes Drumneechy Bovevagh My regards Robert www.ulsterancestry.com >From: Sandra Devlin <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [Derry] Re Devlin/ Dungiven >Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2003 09:50:43 -0300 > >Robert: > >So much thanks for doing this for us. > >I am immediately struck by the name "William Devlin, Drumrammer, >Drumachose, 1826" > >That would fit perfectly with my ancestor William Devlin, born circa 1803 >and father of James born May 17, 1830. > >By chance, if it is not too much trouble -- are there DOWNES on Valuation >in Drumrammer, Drumachose. Hello Sandra, To help you along I have looked at the townland valuations for Dungiven, town and Parish and the surrounding area . I have included the date of the VAL book in which each was found. Dennis Devlin Leckle Boveagh 1827 Edward Devlin Kilhoyle Balteagh 1828 James Devlin Drumsurn Upper Balteagh 1828 John Devlin Drumsurn Upper Balteagh 1828 M. Devlin Ballyquinn Balteagh 1828 P. Devlin Ballyquinn Balteagh 1828 William Devlin Drumrammer Drumachose 1826 >From the above it would seem that Balteagh is the place to look. It is the Parish adjoining Dungiven Parish and would be perhaps 5 miles from Dungiven Town going towards Limavady. The Devlin family rented their homes and small farms from the McCausland family of Fruithill,Limavady. These McCauslands are still living there today. The Church of Ireland Parish Records of baptism and marriage are as follows: Balteagh from 1835 Dungiven from 1845 Boveva from 1818 I wish you well in your research.
