Hi List, I have just received a copy of the aboves marriage which took plave 15 May 1857 Daniels father is Daniel Galbraith Labourer & Marys father is William McColley Labourer. James Marren & George Galbraith witnessed the marriage and I am assuming that George may be related to Daniel like a brother. They also give Ardlough Parish of glendermot as residence at the time of marriage. I am trying to find out when Daniel would have been born as it only has full age on marriage cert so i can find more on his parents. If anyone has a connection to this family and can help me out i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Robyn New Zealand
Hello Robyn If you have contacts with any Smyth's in Londonderry I would be interested. I am trying to unravel my Smyth/s
Hi Robyn, sorry I can't help with your telephone query as I am in Texas. I am researching the name SMYTH in Londonderry, would that happen to be the name you are interested in on the ancestral file? If so I would love to hear from you. Pat TX p.s. I also have the names of some others who are researching the SMYTH name.
I am trying to break down the brick wall as far as my g g grandparents are concerned. They were all before 1864! I have a copy of a letter from a cousin of my grandfather whose address is given as Priestfield. I can find no trace of Priestfield only Priestown. I am presuming that Priestfield was the name of her farm. According to his birth certificate my grandfather - Francis Starrett was born on Twentyninth March 1879 at Killian in the District of Malin in the Union of Inishowen in the county of Donegal. His father was Francis Starrett - Killian mother Sarah Jane Starrett formerly Fulton. His father was a Farmer. The Entry No of his birth certificate is "428 in the Register Book of Births of the above District deposited in my Office (Workhouse, Carndonagh)." Francis died in South Africa on 8 November 1961. Sarah Jane Fulton's death certificate No 137 in the Register Book of Deaths (Workhouse Carndonagh) states that her date of death was Twentyninth November 1914 Killian Widow of a Farmer, age 69 years. She died of heart disease - no medical attendant and the informant was Mary Ann McIntyre, sister, present at death at Killian. Mary Anne was obviously illiterate because "X" was her mark. The death was registered on 12 December 1914. Will I still find the "Workhouse" in Carndonagh? I presume that it is no longer called the Workhouse but would it be the records office? Can anyone help? My Archibald line ends with Major David (1717-1797),probably born in 1717 in County Londonderry or Ulster, Northern Ireland. He married Elizabeth Elliott (1720-1791) and they later lived in Truro,Nova Scotia. His parents were John Archibald (ca 1691-1751) and probably Margaret Wilson (ca 1695/1700-after 1751).John was probably born in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, and died in Londonderry, New Hampshire. His sons, David and Samuel, were born in Northern Ireland, and his other children were born in Londonderry,New Hampshire. Most of the kids ended up in Nova Scotia. Major David's granddad was Robert Archibald, born ca 1668 possibly in County Londerry or Ulster, Northern Ireland. He may have married Ann Boyd or Boyle. Can anyone give me the town or origin of the Archibalds in County Londonderry, Ulster oe even going back to Scotland? Thanks.Jim
Hi Listers, I have joined the list temporarily again to tell you all that I just finished transcribing the public hospital records for New Orleans for March and April 1851. Each time I finish two months and post them, I will write again to remind you of this great resource for tracing your Irish ancestors to the US. I am writing to all the Irish county lists, so if you get multiple copies of this message, forgive me - just skip down below where I have copied all the names in the records from the particular county. In the past, I wrote to suggest that anyone researching their Irish roots should check these records of Charity Hospital in New Orleans. About 85% of the admissions were Irish, sometimes right off the boat thanks to a shipboard epidemic. During the late 1840s and early 1850s, the Irish poured into New Orleans by the tens of thousands - some to settle there permanently and many to travel to points further north up the river. I suggest you check our records, especially if your Irish ancestors settled in St. Louis, Louisville, Cincinnati, or Iowa. As I have said before, the public hospital records are better than the census because of the information they give - the person's place of birth, how long he had been in New Orleans, where he had been before arriving in NO, etc. They are more hit and miss than the census records, but I have been contacted by several people who have successfully located their ancestors in these records. Here is the list of the patients from Co. Derry admitted to Charity Hospital for March and April 1851. Hello Robyn. If I recall correctly, those films also provide a reference number for each marriage. If this is correct, once you have the reference number for the husband's entry, try searching the entire film for someone else with the same reference number. Good luck. ray ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robyn Paterson" <[email protected]> > On these films i have found the husbands but no cross reference record of > the wife.

Hi , I have spent the better part of the morning going through a 1856 & 1857 marriage index film at the LDS. On these films i have found the husbands but no cross reference record of the wife. I have looked under there maiden names, first names various spellings. Is it possible for there to be only one name on the index? If this is not the case does anyone have any ideas on how Mary Jane Mitchell could also have been put under? and Jane Macauley? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to spend money on a copy of the certificates if its wrong. Many thanks Robyn New Zealand
Mitchell doesn't have many variations other than the Mitchel with one 'l' . As for Macauley - try M'Cauley and M'Acauley Jane http://www.from-ireland.net/contents/londerryconts.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robyn Paterson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 02, 2003 12:41 AM Subject: [Derry] MARRIAGE RECORDS > Hi , > I have spent the better part of the morning going through a 1856 & 1857 > marriage index film at the LDS. > > On these films i have found the husbands but no cross reference record of > the wife. > I have looked under there maiden names, first names various spellings. > Is it possible for there to be only one name on the index? > If this is not the case does anyone have any ideas on how Mary Jane Mitchell > could also have been put under? > and Jane Macauley? > Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to spend money on a > copy of the certificates if its wrong. > > Many thanks > > Robyn > New Zealand > > > > ==== NIR-DERRY Mailing List ==== > ~~ The List's Golden Rule ~~ > Keep to genealogy, history, anything ancestors! The first thing to say Robyn is that ther should be a cross reference for Daniel Galbraith if this is the correct reference - you should be able to find a Daniel Galbraith - or some variation on the surname Galbraith, if this Margaret is the right one. The alternative is that Daniel was not his first name and that there is a Galbraith of another first name with the same vol and page number reference - sometimes, onl;y the first name is used in the references. But - whatever name is used - there has to be a Galbraith or variation on that spelling with the same references in order for you to find a Galbraith on that marriage record. Now, the cheapest way for you to do this is to go to the web site of the General Registrar's Office in Dublin http://www.gro.ie and there you will find information on how to order a photocopy of a reference that you already have - quoting that vol and page number for a reasonably cheap fee - between 2 and 3 Euro To the best of my knowledge, they do not 'search' or check records for you, but, if you have a reference for them, then they will post out a photocopy of that record to you - generally speaking, they simply photocopy and post - unfortunately, some records are very faded, or placenames/names spelled differently to the ways you see on other records and they will not read the records for you to tell you exactly what is on them - if the photocopy is bad, then that's the condition of the record and that's what you get. If you purchase a full certificate from them, then they have to work out exactly what is written on any record - that is to say if the original is in bad condition - hard to read - then they are obliged to work out exactly what the words are and put them into the full certificate. One of the things that people don't realise is that all civil registration record photocopies are available through the Dublin General Registrar's Office for all the counties of Northern Ireland up to the year 1922.
