Hi Seeking information on Woods or McGinnis. My mother was Margaret McGinnis, born Upperlands on September 2 1917. She had a twin brother William Robert and a sister Mary Anne (known as Marion) (born 1915). My grandmother was Margaret Jane Woods and my grandfather was John McGinnis. They were married in Mowillian on 13 April 1914. Margaret Jane was one of eight children, the others being Mary, Eliza, William Hamilton, Robert, Emma, Jim and John. Margaret Jane was the daughter of William Woods and Margaret Hutchinson. William was born in 1850 and died in 1906. His brothers and sisters included Agnes, Margaret, Hamilton, Thomas, James and Nancy. A number of the family came out to New Zealand in the mid 1880s and settled at Kumara on the West Coast. Thanks for any information Dorothy Harper Waikanae New Zealand
Hi Listers, In the past, I have written to the Co. Derry (Co. Londonderry) list to tell everyone about the public hospital records on the New Orleans (Orleans Parish) rootsweb site. I am joining the list again temporarily to remind you that I have just finished May and June. New Orleans was one of the major ports in the US in the 1850's, and many immigrants found their way to the public hospital when they were sick because they were poor and could not afford to pay for their medical care. There were patients admitted to the hospital from all over the world. Even if your ancestors wound in areas further up the Mississippi River, or along the Missouri or Ohio Rivers, you should check the New Orleans site, since many people arrived in New Orleans only to stay a short time and make their way to Kentucky, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri and other parts of the midwest. If you have missed my past announcements regarding earlier months of 1851, you might want to check all the names Janurary through June (and now part of July) yourself on the following web site: <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans/charity.htm">Charity Hospital Records Orleans Parish Archives - LAGENWEB - USGENWEB</A> or <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans/charity.htm">http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans/charity.htm</A> The URL of the Orelans Parish (New Orleans) rootsweb home page is: <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.htm">http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.htm</A> Here are the some names of patients from Co. Derry (Co. Londonderry) that appeared in May and June in the admission records: Date of Admiss, Date of Death, Date of Disch, Ward, Name, Age, Occupation 11-Jun 9-Jul -- 7 William Kaine 31 Laborer 16-Jun 9-Sep -- 36 Eliza Carr 14 23-Jun -- 11-Jul 6 John McIlwaine 35 Laborer 3-May -- 19-May 35 Mary Costello alias Byron 48 5-May -- 10-May 34 Esther Cummons 40 9-May -- 12-May 32 Neil Kanning or Canning 26 Laborer 20-May -- 3-Jun 5 John Collins 28 Laborer 23-May 26-May -- 12 John McReady 26 Laborer 17-Jun -- 20-Jul 32 James Jordan 40 Laborer 30-Jun -- 6-Jul 24 James Luskey 32 Carriage Driver 6-Jun 14-Jul -- 25 John McClusky 33 St Btman 10-Jun -- 2-Aug Cott Margaret O'Conner 20 10-Jun -- 19-Jun 19 Patrick O'Donnell 22 Laborer Each record also has the place where the person is from, how long he had been in town, marital status, how long sick, the illiness, hour of admission, and remarks. We are very proud of our site - besides these hospital records, we also have posted all the birth, marriage, and death indexes for New Orleans stored at the State Archives in Baton Rouge. The births cover 1796 - 1901 (the last year possible), the the deaths cover 1804 - 1906 (with more being added daily through 1915), and the marriages cover (1870 - 1905). We also have complete city directories by name and by address (1805, 1811, 1822, 1832, 1842, and 1851 - 1851 by name only), Civil War draft records that appear in the local papers in the Spring 1865, cemetery records, insane asylum records, tens of thousans of obits and much more. Be sure to check out our web site. Good luck with your research. Colleen Fitzpatrick CoCoordinator Orleans Parish (New Orleans) Rootsweb Site
Lt/Cdr D.M.R. Wynne-Roberts is buried in St. Canices Church of Ireland churchyard in Eglinton. The inscription on his headstone reads "Lt. Commander (A) David Wynne-Roberts R.N. Beloved son of Reginald & Dorothy Wynne-Roberts Killed, October 1949 Aged 29 years Mente Manuque." I checked the local papers for an obituary but found nothing. regards ian ----- Original Message ----- From: "wgrice" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, July 12, 2003 12:10 PM Subject: [Derry] Help > Hi Everyone, > > I am new to this list and would be more than grateful if some kind soul can help in my research. > > I am trying to trace any details of my old Fleet Air Arm Commanding Officer Lt/Cdr D.M.R. Jack The church you are looking for St Aidan's is in Magilligan northwest of Limavady. When I visited the parish in 1978 the records were being held in Limavady. My relatives the Somers and McKeever/ McIver were from Magiligan. Some Somers came to Philadelphia ca: 1880-1890. Those that stayed in Ireland married Kelly ' s and Begley's. Hello, Does anyone know of a web site that would give the history of Catholic Church's in Derry? Especially near Limavady. I believe my grandmother was a member of St. Aidan's Catholic Church back in 1882, but I cannot find anything on this parish church. The church is located north of the town of Limavady. My grandmother was born in the Townland of Ballybrissell, but grew up in the next Townland which was Rathfad. Would anyone know if St Aidan's Church would have been the Catholic Church that folks from these Townlands would have attended? Thank you for your help. Jack Jordan

Civil Reg for births did not start in Ireland until 1865. For 1850s births you need to have some idea of what church the parents attended and search there for a baptismal record. You should also search for the record in the local parish church (Church of Ireland) as well.
