    1. [ARMAGH] PRONI Visit - B&B & travel info
    2. Julie M. Hite
    3. PRONI is located in the middle of Balmoral Road, Belfast. It is open M-F 9am to 4:45pm. Thursdays it stays open late to 8:45pm. There is a simple cafeteria on premises which is sufficient to the task and especially nice because there are NO eating places nearby. Belfast is easily accessible by train or bus. It is a 2-hour train from Dublin (leaving from Connelly Station). The cost is 50 euro round trip or 35 one way. Upon arrival at Central Station, I take a taxi to the B&B (less than 10 pounds). There are also buses, but I'm always too anxious to get to PRONI to take more time. I have been to many B&B's throughout Ireland. There are two Bed and Breakfasts within walking distance of the PRONI in Belfast: 1) The Old Rectory - Mary Rosato at oldrectoryni@freenetname.co.uk 148 Malone Road, Belfast This B&B is on a main road south of the center of Belfast, a little over a mile south of Queens University. Malone Road has bus service back into town. The cost of a taxi from Central Station to the B&B is about 8 pounds. The B&B is about 1.5 miles from the center of town where you would find places for dinner, bank machines, phones, etc. The PRONI is an easy 10 minute walk. I have stayed at The Old Rectory twice. Very, very nice B&B - best I've found in Ireland (and ranks up there with the one in Blarney). Warm, homey atmosphere. The rooms are wonderful and you are treated in style. Her husband is a chef and the food is amazing. I feel a bit pampered here. The cost is a bit higher than other B&B's: 37-46 pounds for a single, but the walking distance makes it worth it. The less expensive rooms are not "ensuite" meaning they do not have a private bathroom IN the room. However, my last room was not ensuite here which only meant that I went down the hall to my own private bathroom, but it wasn't a shared bathroom. It felt like home. She has a wonderful room (the Malone room) for 46 pounds (single) that is ensuite, is quite large and has couch, desk and a small fridge. She may let this out as a double as well. Mary and I spoke briefly about family history on my last visit and she's interested in getting started so you can encourage her if you stay here. 2) All Seasons, Belfast - Email: allseasons@fsmail.net Lisburn Road This B&B is on the other main road coming south out of Belfast. I've not stayed here but have spoke with a few people who have. They said it was a nice, somewhat newer B&B. Upon my inquiry, I was quoted a cost of: 30 pounds for a single, I think about 45 for a double. Costs include breakfast. You might ask whether there are any restaurants nearby for dinner -- I've not been up this road. Irish B&B breakfasts are huge(not the continental style)! For a traditional big breakfast, ask for the "Ulster" or the "Full Irish" breakfast. Hope this helps! Happy hunting! Julie Julie M. 3. Let me add that I take the 7:30am train from Dublin, arriving Belfast at 9:30. I have the taxi stop at the B&B first and drop of my bags and then take me to the PRONI. The Old Rectory B&B is very happy to hold your bag until you return that evening, even though your room may not be ready. I am usually at PRONI by 10am. Note that at PRONI they are quite restrictive as to what you can take into the research rooms. They do have lockers. You CAN bring your portable computer and power cord. You CAN bring in your papers. They will give you a large, clear plastic bag to carry your papers in. You CANNOT bring in pens, markers or your own bags of any kind. They provide pencils. They have let me bring my manilla folders with my papers. So I put my computer case in my locker and carry my plastic bag and my portable computer. When I extract, I extract directly to the computer using a Word Table. You can make photocopies of the microfilm and the documents. Copies of microfilm are .75 pence each (about $1.50). Copies of documents range from .30 -.90 pence each. (The pound is about double the dollar.) When I want to eat, I put my computer, et al into my locker and walk outside to the next building for the cafeteria. Hope this helps, Julie Julie M.
