    3. Alison, I was looking for the Tithes, and Valuation records that were between the Tithes and Griffith's. They seem to label land records a bit differently in No. Ireland. In the Republic you have 1. Tithes 2. Notebooks (including House Books, Tenure Books, Field Books) 3. Griffith's. The Notebooks were notes that were in preparation for Griffith's. Sometimes I find a missing generation in those books - someone who did not have land at the time of the Tithes but who had land after that but died before Griffith's. I think the 2nd set of records I sent for were simply referred to as Valuation Records. When I was at the national genealogy conference in Boston in the fall of 2006, I stopped at a table (PRONI) to ask which vocabulary I should use when asking for land records. They were most helpful. I asked for two specific townlands (Eglish, Eglish and Middletown, Tynan). I received photocopies that were easy to read. I also recall receiving them without having a long wait, and the fee I paid was far less than what researchers were asking for. Because I live in the US and the British pound is almost twice the amount of US money, it was important to look for a decent rate. I hope my explanation has helped a little. I don't want to be negative about researchers who are trying to make a living, but from now on I will check with the local depository for whatever records I was looking for to ask what the fee is for photocopying. There is just too big a difference between the American dollar and the British pound not to do that. Jan janfortado@comcast.net
