Dad enlisted in the Irish Guards in January 1939 and saw action as a foot soldier in Boulogne in 1940 and later, as a tank commander, in Normandy in 1944, including Operation Goodwood. He was wounded by shrapnel when his Sherman tank was hit by enemy fire on 11 August 1944 and was evacuated to England. I am also enclosing some details of Irwins from my records. Irwins from the Tandragee district who were killed/died during the First World War - (a) Private J Irwin, 203207, 14th Bn. (Fife and Forfar Yeomanry), Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), from Laurelvale, was killed in action on 2 September 1918, and is buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension. (b) W Irwin's name is also recorded on the Tandragee War Memorial. Irwins from the Tandragee district who served during the First World War - (a) Edward Irwin was a member of Ballymore Parish Church. (b) John L Irwin, 9th Bn., Royal Irish Fusiliers and later Royal Irish Rifles, from Tandragee. He left Tandragee in 1923 and settled in Canada. During the Second World War he served with Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Air Force Ferry Command at Dorval and Korea. (c) Corporal Robert Irwin, 14338, Royal Irish Fusiliers, from Ballylisk, Tandragee. In May 1918 it was reported that he was a POW and in January 1919 it was reported that he had returned home from Germany after being held as a POW. (d) Private Thomas Irwin, 14339, 9th Bn., Royal Irish Fusiliers, was wounded at the Somme in July 1916. He was possibly from Laurelvale. Irwins from the Tandragee district who served during the Second World War - (a) Bertie Irwin, Royal Irish Fusiliers, was a member of Ballymore Parish Church.
