My gggrandfather, James Hughes, probably left Co. Armagh about 1837. He was in Stockport, England, by 1842. I am not sure if he lived somewhere else in England at first or not. It is likely, since we can't find the birth of his oldest daughter in Stockport. I am wondering if there was anything in the late 1830's that might have prompted James to emigrate. There is a family story that he was studying medicine (probably an apprenticeship) and had to give that up when he emigrated. That would indicate an emigration that had some cause. It might simply have been that there was not enough room for all of the family to be in one small dwelling. Thanks for any insight. Jan janfortado@comcast.net
