May Anne as born in Berbice, West Indies and was 7 years old. The Regiment embarked at Gibraltar for Barbadoes on January 20, 1842, arriving on February 25. On Jan 15, 1843, the Grenadier company of the regiment was stationed at Berbice where they suffered very severely from yellow fever. In October 1844, the Grenadiers joined the rest of the regiment at St Vincent. Therefore, since Mary Anne was born in Berbice, Francis must have been in the Grenadier company which was normally about 60-80 men in number. >From the census again, we see William born in Canada at "La Bruri." There is no such place. However, the regiment left the West Indies on Feb 23, 1845 and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia within two days. In July 1845 they boarded a troop ship to take them to Canada East (Quebec)and then a steamer from Quebec City to Montreal where they arrived on July 23. They then went into barracks at La Prairie near Montreal. They left La Prairie (you can see how it could be sounded as La Bruri) On October 9, 1846, to sail to Kingston, Canada West (Ontario). This stay at La Prairie fits with William's age from the census. Finally in September 1847, the Regiment sailed back to Quebec and on to Nova Scotia in October. They were back in England in July, 1848 and remained in Liverpoop from then to April 1850 when they moved to Hull. The period in Liverpool explains George's birth there. They were in Ireland from July 1852 to May 1854.By September 1854 the regiment was on the way to fight in the Crimean War. They suffered heavy casualties there and finally returned to England in August 1856. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
