How about a variation in spelling. Goold? My Kenny family Were Kenny on the shipping into Melbourne, could read and write and actually changed the spelling on the ships list from Canny but in County Clare they are Canny/Carney. Also one name I came across was spelt 5 different ways on 1 page of church baptisms and it was the same family.
