He had 8 siblings born from 1834 to 1857. His parents were Mary Mara and James Kennedy. He emigrated about 1873 and was working on the railroad in Sparta, Wisconsin when he married Mary Isabell Hughes in 1877. I can't trace how either of them got to the USA or why. One of Mary's sisters, Margaret Hughes Rice later arrived and lived nearby. All I know is Mary's father was Bernard and her mother was known as Bridget, but possibly also named Mary Smyth.
