I have a lot of material on the Rutledges and Vance familis and some on the Shanks family where Robert Pender Shanks married my 2nd gt. aunt Maria E. Rutledge on 19 Jan 1859 in Erin, Ontario. I have copied and pasted some info. on Robert Pender Shank from my Legacy software as follows; ____________________________________________________________ Robert was born on the 5 September 1838 in Pollockshaws, Scotland which nowdays would be part of Glasgow. According to a passenger list, we believe he arrived in New York City on the 6 May 1856 at the age of 18 on a ship by the name of "Edinburgh" and then proceeded to Acton, Ontario. In 1859 he married Maria Rutledge in Erin Township, and we believe his brother John was one of the witnesses at the wedding. He is still in Erin in 1860 when his daughter Sarah Jane was born, but by March 1861 he and his family are living in Esquesing Township, Halton County when Sarah Jane is baptized. In the 1861 census for Esquesing Township his occupation is shown as a "teacher". By 1867 when son James Richard is born the family is living in Nelson Township in Halton County, and they are still there at the time of the 1871 census. In 1881 the family is living in Flamborough East in the county of Wentworth North. According to his obituary the family left Ontario in 1888 and went west to Manitoba. We know that in July 1899 the family was living in Daly, Manitoba when Maria his wife died. It would appear as though Robert came back east because in 1901 his is shown as a "boarder" living with a family by the name of Hesston in Eastnor Townhip, Grey County and his occupation once again is shown as a "teacher". Then by 1911 he has once again gone west and is living with his son James in Brandon, Manitoba. In 1916 Robert at age 77 is living with son James and his family in Daly, Manitoba. When Robert dies in 1933 at the age of 95 he is with his son James on a farm 5 miles outside of Rivers, Manitoba. The following is a transcript of his obituary taken from the Georgetown Herald (11 October 1933) who copied it from the Winnipeg Free Press; Robert Shanks, who died Friday Sept 29, at his son's farm near Rivers, Manitoba at the age of 95 years. Burial took place at Uplands Cemetery. He married Maria Rutledge in 1859. Taught in Ontario until 1887. He came west in the spring of 1888. Of four children, three girls and one boy, the three girls predeceased him.
