Hello to all on this List, Having the good fortune to be planning a trip to Co.Armagh in August, and accompanying a 'cousin' who has been delving into our family history connection in Portadown, I wonder if anyone on the List lives in the County or has visited recently. If so, I would be most grateful for some advice for our time there. Off line, if it contravenes the 'rules'! Cheers!...........Judy, Perth W.Australia
Hi Judy I''m Pauline and I live in Armagh, not that close to Portadown but I visit there every week and know the area quite well. How can I help you Pauline www.irishhomesteads.com On Sun, Feb 14, 2010 at 8:31 AM, Judith Acaster <[email protected]> wrote: > Hello to all on this List, > > Having the good fortune to be planning a trip to Co.Armagh in August, > and accompanying a 'cousin' who has > been delving into our family history connection in Portadown, I wonder > if anyone on the List lives in the > County or has visited recently. > > If so, I would be most grateful for some advice for our time there. > Off line, if it contravenes the 'rules'! > > Cheers!...........Judy, Perth W.Australia > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
My wife and I had the pleasure of visitng Armagh/Tyrone this past fall, and really enjoyed it. We visited from Moira to Moyallan in Down, Armagh, and Richhill and Charlemont/Grange and Dungannon in Tyrone, doing the genealogy bit. Then we traveled to South And West Ireland to do the tourist run. Did not see anything prettier than Armagh/Tyrone. I really want to go back. Bob-Sinton.com has a wealth of information and townland maps for most of Armagh. It is weighted heavily to Quaker data, which was helpful to me, but the townland maps are very helpful. Bed and breakfast facilities are everywhere, although we stayed in a motor hotel in Tyrone. Enjoy yourself. If I can answer specifics, will be glad to try. If you rent a car, make sure you get a small sedan, if apropriate. That's what I reserved, but when we got there, they stuck us with a Volvo SUV. Was a good car, but too big and too rough for the roads. Judy, I'd be grateful if you could keep an eye out for a JOSEPH KENNEDY of Portadown, a DRAPER in the early 1800s and his wife JANE. They were a Church of Ireland family whose son JOHN married in Drumcree in 1839. It is from John's death certificate (Sydney 1858) that we learn Joseph was a draper. John married MARY BRADLEY of Drumcree parish. Joseph also had a daughter ANNE KENNEDY who married JAMES STEPHENSON at Drumcree in 1841. Both couples emigrated to NSW. Joseph's eldest child was Jane who also married a Bradley at Drumcree. Many thanks and good hunting.
