Often they gave more info about where the family was from in Ireland. Is this the family in the 1851 Canadian Census (actually taken in early 1852; ages given are as of next birthday): Bristol, Ottawa County, Canada East (Quebec) Gilpin, Henry, farmer, b. Ireland, Church of England, aged 37, married Gilpin, Mary, b. Ireland, aged 37, married Gilpin, Elisabeth, b. Bastow, aged 11 Gilpin, Judith, b. Bristol, aged 9 Gilpin, Meriah, b. Bristol, aged 7 Gilpin, Mary A., b. Bristol, aged 5 Gilpin, Wm. H., b. Bristol, aged 2 If so, then they were in Quebec before 1840. Henry was granted land (100 acres) in Bristol on 23 October 1873. A copy of the land grant may also provide more info. There is another Gilpin family in Pontiac in the 1861 census (William, aged 35, b. Ireland with wife Margaret, aged 30). In the Freeholder Records available at the PRONI website, I find a Henry Gilpin in Balteagh, Co. Armagh in 1832 on land rented from Lord Mandeville. He (or someone with the same name) appears in 1817 in Balteagh on land owned by Mr. Sparrow of Tandragee, Co. Armagh. On land rented from the same landlord, I also find (in 1817), a William, John, Robert, Joseph, Dennis and Richard Gilpin. http://www.lurganancestry.com/seagoetithes1834p1.htm http://boards.ancestry.com.au/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/9352.4.2.2/mb.ashx Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
