I suppose it is possible that James and George Mitchell are brothers, though their ages are about 14 years apart. George both lived and died in Glasgow in 1855. So they may have been in the same area. Did the marriage witnesses on James' marriage certificate bear any relation to James? Do you know where in Glasgow James lived? George apparently lived at 14 Marshall St, Backland when he died, and several other places nearby before that, per this poor relief record on his wife Jane, filed shortly after his death in June, 1855: 18 June 1855, application 41457, Glasgow Poor Recs.: Janet McNaught Mitchell, res. 14 Marshall St., Back land, One Stair up and 1st left door with Mrs. Thomson; country of Birth New Cumnock; wid., ae 32; Children and coffin, etc., for husband; dependants; Samuel 7 yrs., Wm. 5 yrs., John 9/12 yrs.; settlement New Cummnock; "Applicants Husband George Mitchell 34 Years a Labourer born in Ireland died on the 18 Currt his Complaint was Consumption he was unable to work for 4 Mos. before his death"; Res. in present house, Glasgow, 21 das.; Before in Pontick, Barony, 1 yr. 9 mos.; Before in Macalpine.
