Author: Boosephus Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/10027.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: WOW!!! Thank you!!! The Rose McConville you showed listed in the 1821 census as 10 years old must be my Great-Great-Great Grandmother, Rose/Roseanne/Rosana. Rosana married Patrick MOAN in Ireland in the 1830's-1840's. They had children born in Ireland: Owen, Arthur, Mary, Elizabeth, Bridget, Catherine, etc....? Patrick Moan must have died in Ireland in the 1850's-1870's because he is not in the 1870 census and Rosana Moan is listed as a widow in the 1880 New York census. Other than Owen, Arthur, and Mary, the other MOAN children must have come to America after the 1870 census but before the 1880 census. You seem to have a lot of resources. Would you mind checking them for the MOANs? I really appreciate your help. You have given me a great start! 2. Jerry Kelly
    3. A Aindriú a chara / Hi Andrew, I don't know whether this will help, but moen / moan is an Irish word meaning 'silent' / 'dumb' / 'mute'.  It's a mythological reference to Labraid Moen, the primary ancestor-hero or ancestor-god of the Laighin who once held not only Leinster but Fir nÓl nÉcmacht, i.e., Connacht before it was conquered by the Connachta. There's a plain there called Magh Moen (Plain of the Silent One), also known as Moenmagh.  It's the plain around Loughrea in Co. Galway.  I wondered whether that powerful tradition might have influenced someone to take Moan / Moen as a surname in that area. So, on a hunch, I browsed for "co. galway moan surname" and found this: http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Moen Don't know if it's helpful but go n-éirí an t-ádh leat ar do sheilg / good luck on your search. Le gach dea-ghuí / Best, Jerry Treibheanna Éireannacha www.irishtribes.com

    3. I have John McAdams married to Bridget Branigan. I don't know for sure where they came from but a fellow researcher suggested Armagh as a possibility. They were married in the US in Ohio in 1844 but I don't know how long John had been here before he married etc. I have some info on the offspring here but nothing prior to 1844.
