    1. [ARMAGH] James and Lydia HUNTER
    2. Joanne Gaudio
    3. I'm searching for information on my 3rd great-grandparents, James and Lydia HUNTER, who lived in Portadown from about 1826 until 1842, when the widowed Lydia took her children and immigrated to the United States. Her grandson, Benjamin Henry RIPTON, wrote that his mother Anna HUNTER RIPTON had been born in Portadown, Northern Ireland. The only facts I have are these: Lydia TOPLIS (b. 1791 in Derbyshire) married James HUNTER in Derbyshire on 5 May 1826 and moved to Northern Ireland. James is thought to be of Scottish origin, and we don't know if he already lived in Ireland when he was married or if he was going there for the first time. James and Lydia had 4 HUNTER children born in Ireland - Anna (b. 1827), twins Rachel and Lydia (b. 1830), and Thomas (b. 1833). James died sometime before 1842, the year Lydia and the children traveled to New York. They went to upstate New York where Lydia's sister and brother-in-law Benjamin and Dorothy TOPLIS RIPTON already lived. In New York Anna HUNTER married her first cousin, Henry RIPTON. I subscribe to ancestry.com, but there is little information available there - I've been told that censuses and parish records burned at some point. Does anyone recognize any of these names or have any suggestions of where I can look for further information? I'd especially like to find out when James HUNTER died. I can't travel to Ireland, unfortunately, so I'm pretty much limited to what I can access by computer. I'd also like to find some information on Portadown generally in the 1826-1842 time period. Much of what I've seen on the internet is from more recent times. Thank you for any and all help. Joanne Gaudio Massachusetts, USA

Author: wolfer68 Surnames: Garner, Hoffstadt Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/2929.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm trying to locate any ancestral information on my great grandfather CHARLES G. GARNER. Passed down word of mouth information indicated my great grandfather may have been an Irish Catholic from Northern Ireland. I'm guessing that Charles G. Garner may have been born in mid to late 1850s. He died in Dallas, Texas in 1891. The earliest date I have for him in the USA is 1878/79 found in the Dallas TX City Directory. He married my great grandmother Nannie Hoffstadt, who may have migrated from Louisville, KY, in Dallas around 1886. I am unable to find any record of his immigration; his birth date or place of birth; the names of his parents; or if they immigrated to the USA with Charles G. and when. I have found evidence of GARNERS in the counties of Armagh, Down, Antrim, and Fermanagh. I found a record of a Charles Garner in Corbracky, Drumcree Parish, County Armagh in the 1848 - 1864 Primary Valuation of Ireland. I have been unable to determine if that Charles is one of my ancestors - or the father of Charles G. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
