    3. Good monring:: What is the weather like in Co Tyrone this time of year, and is there any difference in the weather north and south of the Sperrin Mountains? That is would the weather in general be different in Derry from that of Armagh as one travels from Derry through the gap in the Sperrin Mountains to the south side past the Daragh Forest and Slieve Gallion onwards to Armagh? 3. Joanne, You should try searching the Tithe Applotment books serving as a sort- of census of landholders for 1822-1837. If you look at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) Family History site at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/ supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0% 2C0&titleno=319193&disp=Tithe+applotment+books+and+indexes%2C+fo++ you can find specific films covering surnames or placenames you are interested in. Then you have to go to your local LDS Family History Center and find out if they can order the films you want to look over. Some films are not available, and you might make a trip to Salt Lake City, or better yet to PRONI in Belfast to view the records. Or you might find a friend here or hire a genealogist to look through a few records for you. Secondly, PRONI has many records [in some ways not complete] with details about leased land. These seem to require an effort to look through, but you may find specifics about ancestors you are interested in if you should know fairly accurately where they lived in Ireland. Thirdly, there may be church records to explore. If not, what year does it start at for that particular County? The price of the CD seems a bit expensive, just to check on one surname, but sometines one has to pay to obtain info. and a starting point. Regards Garry

    3. This might help FamilySearch News Release 27 March 2007 One Million Historical Names from Canada Go Online Nova Scotia Releases Early Birth, Marriage, and Death Records SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH-Early vital records of Nova Scotia, Canada, are viewable over the Internet for the first time and for free, thanks to a joint project by the Genealogical Society of Utah, FamilySearch, and the Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management (NSARM). The records include one million names found in birth records from 1864 to 1877, marriages from 1864 to 1930, and death records from 1864 to 1877 and 1908 to 1955. Users can search the database at www.novascotiagenealogy.com Nova Scotia is the first province in Canada to digitize all of its historical vital statistics and make them available online. "This project provides key information to researchers on their ancestors," said Genealogical Society of Utah regional manager Alain Allard. "It involves the vital records-births, marriages, and deaths-which are a key record set to find, identify, and link ancestors into family units." The Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) first microfilmed most of Nova Scotia's vital records back in the 1980s. In 2005, GSU used FamilySearch Scanning to convert those microfilms to digital images, while at the same time capturing additional vital records with a specially designed digital camera. Volunteers for the Nova Scotia Archives then used the images to create the searchable electronic index, which was completed in 2006. Anyone can now search names in the index and view a high quality digital copy of the original image online for free at NSARM's Web site, www.novascotiagenealogy.com. In the near future, the index and images will also be available on FamilySearch. org. Researchers who want to obtain an official copy of a record can do so online through the Nova Scotia Archives. The cost will be CAN$9.95 for an electronic file and CAN$19.95, plus shipping and taxes, for paper copies. Nova Scotia Provincial Archivist, W. Brian Speirs, said the cooperation of GSU was crucial to this important project. "Without the Genealogical Society of Utah offering in the early days of the project to provide complimentary digitization of all the records as their contribution to the initiative, the proposed undertaking would have been dead in the water and gone nowhere," Speirs said. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen Hart Anthony" <KarenHart@maine.rr.com> To: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com>; <NIR-ARMAGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2007 1:52 PM Subject: Re: [ARMAGH] Rogers Family > Please, how did you find out the ship they came on? 3. Hi folks, Time to remind newcomers (and some of the not-so-new subscribers) to our list some basic posting suggestions :- 1) If you are enquiring about a particular surname, put it the Subject line, typed in CAPS. The village or town name should be kept in lowercase (except for its first letter, of course) 2) This convention should continue in the body of the message - SURNAMES, CAPS - Placenames, Lowercase. 3) It helps if you give us everything you know about the person. Tell us the places you have looked and found them (census, etc.) It is pointless others repeating where you have already found them. 4) Try and keep your message brief, but complete. 5) Always read through your message before you send it. Are there any typos? Dates correct? Names spelled correctly? 6) Make sure they were in the geographical area this list covers. We aren't here to search the whole country for you. 7) Don't leave the list immediately after posting or you might not receive your reply. 8) It is always polite to thank those who have helped you, but please send a private message directly to them. 9) And finally - be nice. Dave

I recognize the Hunter name as showing up in So. Armagh. I believe one HUNTER married into the STEVENSON line(one of my main lines) but have very little info. I'll keep your info in mind..........Syl at sjsb@img.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joanne Gaudio" <jgaudio@charter.net> To: <NIR-ARMAGH@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 30, 2007 9:41 AM Subject: [ARMAGH] James and Lydia HUNTER > I'm searching for information on my 3rd great-grandparents, James and Lydia HUNTER, who lived in Portadown from about 1826 until 1842, when the widowed Lydia took her children and immigrated to the United States. Her grandson, Benjamin Henry RIPTON, wrote that his mother Anna HUNTER RIPTON had been born in Portadown, Northern Ireland. The only facts I have are these: > Lydia TOPLIS (b. 1791 in Derbyshire) married James HUNTER in Derbyshire on 5 May 1826 and moved to Northern Ireland. James is thought to be of Scottish origin, and we don't know if he already lived in Ireland when he was married or if he was going there for the first time. > James and Lydia had 4 HUNTER children born in Ireland - Anna (b. 1827), twins Rachel and Lydia (b. 1830), and Thomas (b. 1833). > James died sometime before 1842, the year Lydia and the children traveled to New York. They went to upstate New York where Lydia's sister and brother-in-law Benjamin and Dorothy TOPLIS RIPTON already lived. In New York Anna HUNTER married her first cousin, Henry RIPTON. > I subscribe to ancestry.com, but there is little information available there - I've been told that censuses and parish records burned at some point. Does anyone recognize any of these names or have any suggestions of where I can look for further information? I'd especially like to find out when James HUNTER died. > I can't travel to Ireland, unfortunately, so I'm pretty much limited to what I can access by computer. I'd also like to find some information on Portadown generally in the 1826-1842 time period. Much of what I've seen on the internet is from more recent times. > Thank you for any and all help. > Joanne Gaudio > Massachusetts, USA > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NIR-ARMAGH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
