He married Letitia Carson (born about 1812 in Ireland) and they had at least one child, John Drennan born about 1844 before they emigrated to Inchinnan, Scotland. The connection to Ireland was maintained because in the 1881 Scottish census there was a Margaret Carson, born about 1865 in Ireland, living with my great grandparents Robert Sharp Gilchrist and Letitia (Scottish born daughter of James &Letitia Drennan). Any clues as to where in Ireland they came from would be much appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Gary, I don't know what is available for borrowing, but the following link will give you an idea as to the databases available at the Family History Library (LDS in Salt Lake City) and their size: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/ supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0% 2C0&titleno=319193&disp=Tithe+applotment+books+and+indexes%2C+fo++ [You may have to copy the link into your browser window, omitting any spaces or carriage returns.] There is also FHL BRITISH Film 1279330 Item 21: County Armagh freeholders lists, 1830-1839 [which presumably can be borrowed at local Family History Centers you can locate in New Zealand at http:// www.familysearch.org ]. Besides this source, maybe someone on the list here would look up a surname for you at PRONI in Belfast. 1. Travel Question - First week of April (E Macklin) Eric, The response from Pearl is technically correct in that the Northern Hemisphere global weather systems are west to east and rain will be deposited on the western side of hills or mountains leaving the eastern side drier. Statistics prove this principle. However, depending upon how much rain there is up there (the strength of the system) , it may also rain (softly, of course, in Ireland) on the eastern side. Those on that side get their gardens and crops watered too. It is the other way round for the Southern Hemisphere. I was an Armagh resident for some years and it does rain there too. The old saying of, "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers" was indeed generally true but I suspect that global warming is changing the pattern as we don't necessarily see this distinction nowadays. Best wishes for your trip and "may the wind be always at your back". Howard. + -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Thanks, Bill. No luck in searching familysearch.org - in fact, searching for my two adult names produced almost nothing in Armagh. I can't even be certain they lived in Portadown the whole time - that's only what my great-grandfather wrote down on an informational sheet 60 years after the fact! Joanne Gaudio
Joannne: Your message: <Can someone with lots of experience in researching in Armagh tell me if it's realistically possible to find information in the period of 1826-1840? I asked a question and received several good ideas for places to look for information, but all begin after that period - example, Griffiths Valuation, which says it begins in 1847, even though it was authorized earlier than that. So I'm wondering if I have any hope of finding info from this early a period, or if I should just go on to other things! Thanks. Joanne Gaudio> It is fairly clear that the LDS church has done a fair amount of record extraction research on the parish records from Northern Ireland at least, I know it seems silly, but have you done a search on some of your ancestors in Family Search.org?? I found my great grandparents already there from parish records that ran from 1800-1910ish or so (Eglish parish near the city of Armagh) so it could be that the parish records have been done. It is worth a try anyway. I have found quite a few parish records in Armagh starting around 1800 so you may be lucky as well. A locality search in the Family History Library catalog (thankfully online and you don't have to go to a Family History Center to do that search anymore) should show what is available if you have a good idea of where your ancestors are from. Good luck, my pain is trying to find sources in the same area from before 1800.
Eric as one who was born and bred in Derry We always said if it was raining in Derry then it would be dry the other side of the mountainan visa versa. Pearl Hayes (nee Lappin) ps when I took my young grandchildren over to Ireland they told me that the rain was okay as it was soft rain. ----- Original Message -----
