I have been looking for any information on the family of Alexander GORDON and Mary LEE of Cooey, Tynan, Armagh. Their children were William, Jeannie (born abt 1877) and Mary Emily (born 10 June 1878). I believe that Alexander, Mary and Jeannie all died about 1894. Mary Emily moved to Australia and William stayed in Ireland. Mary Emily eventually ended up in the U.S. There was another GORDON family in Cooey, Tynan headed by Nixon GORDON and Sarah LYONS. They had children named Hugh (b: 1856), William (b: 1857), David Ferguson (b: 1862) and Elizabeth (b: 1864). The Hugh Loughead GORDON who died in 2003 and was buried from the Lislooney Presbyterian Church is a descendent of this family. I received a most wonderful reply from Rev. Maurice Stewart of the Presbyterian, Knappagh, Lislooney Congregations, with much information on this Nixon GORDON family, but there was nothing regarding my Alexander GORDON family. I then wrote to Rev William Barry Paine, Tynan questioning if the family of Alexander GORDON and Mary LEE were listed in his church records. Unfortunately, he did not reply. This was all in 2005, so I have rather given up on trying to find anything on MY Gordon family. I have run out of ideas to pursue. Thanks again, Betty Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was up there last week and I asked my uncle about any Gordons in the area. He mentioned that a Gordon lived in a small holding up until the 50's when he died. The house is still there, albeit somewhat dilapidated and has been unoccupied since his death. Apparently, when he passed away he willed his property to the Church of Ireland. It is a bit disappointing that Loughgilly Parish is probably where the McMurray husband came from if the two came over together. I had been expecting him to be in the Lurgan area which is thick with related McMurrays. However, it is exciting to hear from a descendent. I talked with Mary Cotton a while ago. She put the tree on Family Tree on Rootsweb, but she did not know of your Harry. She listed 12 other children of Thomas and Isabelle. It was Harry's sister Agnes who married my Stewart McCleary. Stewart's father, Stewart brought most of his children over from Corcreany, Donaghcloney, Co. Down and they have a large tree in Australia. Since there were a few intermarriages among the families in Victoria, do you have any other relatives on Mary's tree? Mary Cotton's line through Henry McCleary was somehow related to mine in Ireland and then we saw another connection in Victoria involving Corcreany Renfrews. I gather that all these families had government assistance for transportation and were part of a colonization plan. Do you know anything about that? My family went to the US and didn't mention family in Australia except maybe gt gt uncle David James McCLeary b. 1905. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Any one familiar with Thomas McCann born in Armagh, Ireland in 1848? We found his Headstone in a small cemetery in Winona, Minnesota, He died in 1876, He's buried near our Michael McCann's first wife,Margaret McCann who was from Clinton, Iowa,( Maiden name unknown). Margaret died in less than a month after their first child, William McCann was born. Any information on Thomas would be appreciated, Ann T, Meyer
Back in February I asked how many Presbyterian churches were in Ballymore Parish, and which had been Ulster Synod and which Secession Synod. Fellow Listers provided the names of five churches, but no Synod. A couple recommended Lawrence Kirkpatrick's new book, "Presbyterians in Ireland, an Illustrated History." I bought the book, a beautiful book with pictures of every Presbyterian church in Ireland, as well as brief data on each and historical information on the development of the church on Ireland. This is what I found: CONGREGATION, (Synod), Founded (or first mentioned), and Earliest Records (from Ryan's Irish Records (1997)) CLARE (Ulster) f.m. 1679 b. 1824, m. 1825 CLARE (Secession) early 19th C. CREMORE (Secession) 1802 1831 POYNTZPASS (Ulster) 1836 b. 1840, m. 1850 TANDRAGEE (Ulster) 1825 b. 1830, m. 1835 TYRONE'S DITCHES (Secession) 1762 1832 (aka DRUMBANAGHER) This information was useful to me. I need some help with these two families. Henry FINCH born about 1805 in County Down (according to his naturalization papers filed in Clinton Co. NY) Barbara CLINDINING born County Armagh (according to family legend). They had two children Eliza born 1825 in Ireland and Nancy born 1829 in Ireland. Left Ireland in 1831. According to family legend they first settled in Gataneau Point, Canada then were in Clinton County NY before 1840. I believe their parish in Ireland may have been Shankill Parish. Are there records for Shankill Parish between 1805 and 1831? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Joyce Finch, Magalia, CA
