Doh ! You'd have thought that seeing as it was my first post to this list............I'd have checked everything through before I hit 'Send'. The dates in the first posting should all start with '18..' and not '19..'. Apologies for the confusion. Adele
Hi list, Could anyone tell me about the given name: Terence - Terrance - Torrance - Torrence. Is it Terlagh in Gaelic? Is it Scottish? My g-g-grandfather's name was Terence MAYNES - MANES - MAINS - MANUS. Thank you for any background you can give me on his given name? Helen M. Dear 'Listers', I do not have access to a Family History Centre here in the Isle of Man and the posting by "Syl" has prompted me to ask if anyone would kindly let me know if they come across my family name BENSON in old records of ARMAGH. Did people have to be worth a minimum amount before being eligible to vote? I have managed to discover that my g.g. grandfather WILLIAM BENSON, a weaver, was born c1827 in 'Armagh' (whether City or County not stated) and married a RACHAEL WALLACE. They had children THOMAS 1856; ROBERT 1859; JOSEPH 1862 JAMES HENRY 1864/5. There may also have been an older sister ELLEN. Any information about where WILLIAM and his parents lived, also his christening and marriage would be welcomed. I know something of William's later life but going back to 1827 is proving to be difficult. Along the way I have picked up hints that the townlands of TEAGY AND TARTARAGHAN may be associated with the BENSON name. Yours in hope, Howard Benson. + Message: 2 Date: Thu, 24 May 2007 11:03:51 -0700 From: "Syl" <sjsb@img.net> Subject: Re: [ARMAGH] STEPHENS To: <nir-armagh@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <003301c79e2d$e6b9c640$24fea8c0@v0d1n7> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello Sid...........We corresponded recently about your Stephens family. I was reading a film on Armagh today at our local Family History Centre. There was a list of voters for 1851-2. These voters were listed by Barony. I noticed in the Barony of Upper Fews that there was a John Stevens (spelling isn't so important) listed as living in Crossmaglen. If might be worth having a look around that area..........Hope this helps........Syl - No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Hello Listers I am once again listing my researching interests in Armagh, Cty Armagh in the hope someone may be researching same. My ggrandmother Mary Ann ELLIOT born about 1846 to Richard Elliot, farmer, & Frances Cowbray [as shown on her marriage record] emigrated to Victoria Australia prior to 1873 when she married Alexander Cruickshank Stewart/STEWART in Sale, Victoria. I have not been able to find a townland or area so have not been able to search parish registers for Mary Ann's birth. Any information or help in finding Richard & Frances ELLIOT and their daughter Mary Ann would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Joan in Australia

But there is also another family of Hughes that lived farm and as far as i know they were not related to my family . I will do my best to find out more about the restaraunt ,but i am not sure when will get over to Ireland again as I live in Scotland. It also strange that my great grandfather Patrick and his brother Henry were mason labrours and that story i got when came to Ireland was he great grandad was builing a home on the farm but ran out of money and came to scotland to make his money on ship guards the rest results in me being born in Scotland . thank you Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It was the same weekend that the village had their annual Graveyard Sunday. It was lovely to see how the old tradition is still very much respected. There is a Restaraunt named Traynors/Trainers in the Blackwater town who may be able to give you information as the Hughes have been around that area for generations and are all well known making good fortunes in the building trade. Also, as most families own farms and land, the farm house is always passed onto the eldest son and other land may be set aside for other sons to build their homes. Hope this helps. Good luck too. I have managed to track down more of my Hughes family . On of them being a James born 1891 however he was born in Scotland . His father was Henry Hughes who was born in Corr and Aughtarrgh ( please excuse spelling for Aughtarrgh) in Eglish parish Blackwater district Co,Armagh and his mother was Jane Goodwin also born Ireland Co.Tyrone . Henry was my grandfather Patrick brother and Jane was grandmother Mary m.s Goodwin sister . Although James was born in Scotland as was several of Henry and Jane's childern .After Jane's death Henry and the family can't not be found in Scotland anywhere so they well have gone home to Ireland or came to you next of the woods . After all the above story i don't know who James married . Sorry to give you such a long story . I have been to Corr and Aughtarragh quite recently seem there are to famlies Hughes from this area and from what i can makeout they lived just one farm apart but are not related or at least i haven't been able to connect them together so far . If you would wish i can suppply you James brother and sisters names if you want to e-mail at margaretmbrown1455@hotmail.co.uk Hughes is such common name in Armagh that it a nightmare to research . regards margaret Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The early marriage record likely came from family records or from early church records which are held locally in the churches. .....Hope this helps...Syl ----- Original Message ----- From: "The Websters" <wbwebster@optusnet.com.au> To: <nir-armagh@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 20, 2007 2:21 AM Subject: [ARMAGH] Marriage record 1839 > Hello > >marriage 18 OCT 1839 at Drumcree, Armagh where might this and other results be obtained, as they are all quite early? Anne Bulloch was beautiful, efficient, religous with alot of determination which stood her in good stead in later life. George was tall, handsome and extremely good natured. Anne was the daughter of a family of wealthy jewellers in Armagh,Ireland. They came to America in 1820,where they lived in the United States for a while, then came to Canada. They stopped in muddy York,(Toronto)for a time before settling in Mono Township lot 7, con.5. this is north of Toronto.
