Hello List, I am new to this list and trying to find out the birth information about our GG Grandfather THOMAS JOHN BOYD WILLSON, he was born around the 1830's in County Armagh, he married REBECCA JANE MORROW from county Tyrone. We are not sure if they married in Ireland or in Australia where they settled and had their family. The family name of BOYD has been carried down to present day and we have been led to believe it was his mothers maiden name, but this is only hearsay, so no proof on that. We think is father was JOHN WILLSON but again no definite proof. Any help would be greatly appreciated or directions as to where I can go next. thanking in advance Dianne Melbourne |Australia

All I know is that my grandfather, James Gerald Newbold GALLOWAY, was born at Catherine Street, Newry, Ireland in 1892 - to William GALLOWAY who was born in 1886, Strathmiglo, Scotland, and Katie / Catherine MAGEE, who was born in Newry. As stated in my earlier message, I also know that James had a brother called William, but I don't know whether there were any other siblings. If there were, there would be a male called Alexander, and females called Catherine and Janet or Jessie. ToWhomItMayInterest: George LAVERTY, born 1782 in Ireland, died July 1866 in Oak Mountain, Woodstock Parish, Carleton County, New Brunswick, buried 31 July 1866, by the Anglican minister of Woodstock, N.B., burial site unknown. He married Elizabeth (BROWN) LAVERTY. Notes for George LAVERTY: After extensive research in New Brunswick and Ireland for the roots of the LAVERTY family, no records have been found to establish the birthplace of George. Family members believe it was County Armagh. Research by Armagh Ancestry, 42 English St., Armagh, N. Ireland in 1993 covered Presbyterian records only. They suggested looking at Church of Ireland data. It would appear that George and Elizabeth arrived in North America c.1816, as census records show that William was born in Ireland in 1815 and Isaac in New Brunswick in 1817. We have no information on their early years except for the birth of John in Maugerville, Sunbury County., in 1825. A fire in the church rectory there in 1845 destroyed existing records. An 1877 fire in the Saint John Customs House affects early immigration records which might have provided some clue to George's origins. The earliest record we have is a statement from Michael O'Donnell dated 18 July 1832 transferring his claim for land to George Laverty and a petition by George Laverty for said land in Richmond Settlement, Carleton County, Lot 10, Tier 2 dated 24 August 1835. This property is shown on map #111 of Land Grants in the name of William Laverty, granted to him 6 September 1860. It contains 200 acres in the area known as Oak Mountain, just south of Speerville, near Debec. In 1997 this property was owned by Gordon Acott, R.R.#5, Debec, N.B.EOJ1JO (Property Ident. #10086551. We do not know the exact burial place of George. PANB F-1094 Anglican Church Records, Woodstock Parish lists his burial on 31 July 1866, age 84 years, by Rev. S.D. Lee Street. Anglican burials at that time took place in the cemetery at Lower Woodstock. Lee Street himself is buried there. There is no Laverty stone and perusal of an early map at the Anglican church in Woodstock in 1997 showed no record. Many of the old graves and stones were moved when the Mactaquac Dam was built. We know nothing of the death and burial of George's wife, Elizabeth. He may have been buried with her. She died before 1851 as he is listed as a "widower" in that census. The Laverty property in Oak Mountain borders on what later became the cemetery for St. Andrew's Presbyterian (later United) church. St Andrew's was built in 1886 and an earlier church south of that location in 1868, both after George's death. The owner of the land, Gordon Acott, has no knowledge of any graves on his property." If some kind soul may be visiting PRONI, may I ask please if he or she could do a microfilm lookup for a specific parish, event and date? There is no urgency and I would be grateful for the result at any time. Never having been able to visit PRONI, I cannot tell how long this lookup should take but I hope it would not be long enough to be an inconvenience The source I have is a patron contribution to the IGI so I can only hope that it is correct and that the parish record may show even more information. The details from this source are: Drumcree - Marriage - 18 OCT 1839 - John KENNEDY to Mary BRADLEY. Microfilm ref no: MIC/1/21, 42-43. If this is the couple that I am looking for, they had a daughter born nearly 12 years later in Australia, in 1851, but I have not been able to identify their immigration arrival - there is no shortage of John and Mary Kennedys. If I were further able to learn from the baptismal records that they had children, that would either indicate when they emigrated or, if beyond 1851, would unfortunately rule out this couple. Many thanks Bill Webster Sydney

Also since they were Catholics the LDS has some early records on film. Try their website and go to library catalogue and use keyword "Catholic church Armagh" and you should get a list of their holdings and see if its worth looking at any in your time frame. It only costs a few dollars to order a film and view it at a LDS centre and you make strike it lucky. Good luck. Brenda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ksaxe Surnames: McConnell, McDonald, McDonnell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/3725.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John, I was looking for McDonald variant surnames on the Armagh board today and found your post. I am a McConnell researcher and was planning to make a post to the Armagh board about the Clan Donald DNA Project. Many of the closest matches to the McConnells in the study have variant surnames such as MacDonald. For some reason, the McDonnell spelling was not listed in the surname list for the project, so McDonnells looking for a DNA project in the past may easily have missed it. The administrators responded very quickly to my request to list McDonnell as an included surname, and I hope you will consider joining the project. It is very well-established, with an outstanding website with very helpful results tables. You can check out the project at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/. The first McConnell listed on the project results tables traces his ancestry to Tanderagee in Armagh. You can find out more about him and others in the project by finding them on the tables. They include DNA test values and links to a database with genealogy information on many of the participants, including the McConnell who traces his line to Tanderagee.
