    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: samwells115 Surnames: Irwin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/4804.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Richard, Family lore has it that Richard Irwin had a brother who was also in the Army. The family purchased two ranks, a major and lieutenant. As with most lore I could not confirm; but Richard Irwin's discharge listed his first rank as Sergant, never a private. Then research into the regiment I found a William Irwin enlisted Northern Ireland 3 years prior to Richard as a Lieutenant 28th a foot. William died in Australia 1840 as brevet Major. I need to follow up on William to see if there are any records to tie him back to Tandragee. What battles did your father serve in WWII? 1. [ARMAGH] ELLIOTT from LURGAN
    2. Elizabeth York
    3. Hi List We are finally travelling to Lurgan in July to see what it is like but I would like to do a bit more research in preparation for when we get there and I was hoping for some advise on how I can get any further ! This is what I know so far:- My THOMAS ELLIOTT was born 28 April 1887 in Avenue Road, Lurgan - son of THOMAS ELLIOTT and MARY ANNA (nee DAWSON). I have his birth certificate. On his WWI record his religion was "Church of Ireland" His father, Thomas, was by 1911 described as a laundry manager. By 1911 he was living in HOVE, SUSSEX where he married Annie Muriel ASHWORTH from Dublin. This is what I'd like to find out 1) I'd like to find the family on the 1901 census I've looked on the transcribed 1901 census for Lurgan but unfortunately they are not living at Avenue Road anymore - I'm now starting to plough through the other streets as the search engine doesn't seem to be working! www.lurganancestry.net <http://www.lurganancestry.net/> This might give me any birth dates / names of siblings too. 2) I'd like to find a marriage certificate for THOMAS ELLIOTT & MARY ANNA DAWSON But I know Thomas was one of about 8 children and I think he was one of the oldest so their marriage was probably around 1885. 3) I'm presuming Church of Christ The Redeemer is the most probably church for the Elliott's to have attended in Lurgan? (records are in Proni) 4) There seem to be 4 Directories for Armagh which might give me a laundry for Lurgan. Can these be seen online anywhere? 1881 Slater, Royal National Commercial Directory of Ireland, NLI 1883 S. Farrell, County Armagh Directory and Almanac 1888 George Henry Bassett, The Book of Armagh 1894 Slater, Royal Commercial Directory of Ireland, NLI I'm aware of the PRO and the GRO in Northern Ireland but am I missing any other resources on the net that I could use? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. Regards Elizabeth York In Leicestershire, UK

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: muddwoman Surnames: Emerson / McCormick Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/9340/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great-grandfather Joseph's parents were Oliver and Annie E. Emerson. Joseph fought in WWI for Canada and was killed in 1918; shortly before that, his son, my grandfather, was born, and Joseph's wife passed away. My grandfather was raised by his maternal grandparents, the McCormicks. I know when Joseph was killed, Oliver had already passed away, and Annie was listed as next-of-kin, in Bessbrook, Co. Arnaugh, Ireland. I can't find the 1911 census online, so if anyone has a copy and can find out if the Emersons lived there, I would greatly appreciate it. They did move around...my great-grandfather was born in 1895 in Scotland. My family tree goes almost straight back, as I am an only child, my father had one sister, my grandfather was an only child, and apparently my great-grandfather was the only son of Annie and Oliver. The family name dies with me. I'd at least like to know if Oliver had brothers, and find out more of my ancestors for my kids. Thanks so much Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: wbwebster Surnames: BRADLEY KENNEDY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/9336.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: May I respond that a connection should never be discounted until disproved. How many BRADLEY families there may have been in Armagh around 1800 is one question to consider. My Mary Bradley's husband, John Kennedy, was born about 1819, 20 at his marriage in 1839. Marrying young, we would suspect Mary to have been born between about 1819 - 1822. At those times it was common for a mother's child bearing to cover much more than a decade, with much infant mortality interspersed. Your Sarah, if born around 1805 - 1812, could easily have been Mary's older sister or near cousin. Demonstrating it is another question. By the way, John Kennedy's death certificate in 1858 records that he had been in New South Wales for 17 years, indicating that they had emigrated from Ireland about 1840/41, shortly after their marriage. His father in Armagh is given as JOSEPH KENNEDY, and a Draper, which would tend to indicate a town dweller. We will probably have to leave it there until someone has the chance to delve into the parish records over a quarter century period or more. Unfortunately, I believe my events pre-date the Valuations and Aplotments records that could provide further information. Best wishes, Bill. Mary BRADLEY married John KENNEDY at Drumcree, Armagh 1839 (probably October 18). His parents given as JOSEPH KENNEDY, occupation Draper (presumably in Armagh, possibly Drumcree), and Jane. Mary and John Kennedy emigrated to New South Wales where, at the birth of daughter Sarah Ann in 1851, his occupation is given as Sawyer. At his death in 1858 aged 39, his occupation is given as Publican. His burial and the baptism and marriage of his daughter were conducted as Church of England ceremonies. There are more children. The above come from Australian BDM records. Seeking information from Armagh on BRADLEY and KENNEDY families. Unfortunately I have not yet found Mary (Bradley) Kennedy's death or re-marriage in Australia, made difficult by an abundance of Mary Kennedy's. Such information may have given the names of Mary Bradley's parents. This information may be in the marriage record in the Drumcree parish records but I cannot access those without assistance. Bill. Author: Glebehill Surnames: Irwin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/4804.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Sam Thank you very much for your comprehensive response about Richard Irwin's military career. That now makes 3 soldiers from the Tandragee District who took part in the Battle of Waterloo that I am aware of. My interest in family history started over 8 years ago following the death of my father, also called Richard. Dad had served during the Second World War with the Armoured Battalion of the Irish Guards. As I said, I started out researching our family history but this soon expanded to include a history of the town of Tandragee, where I was born, and the general area. There is a war memorial in the town recording the names of those men from the district who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars - so, I decided to try and find out more about their background and their military history. In doing so I came across the names of many more men and women from the area who had also served but survived the World Wars - so I decided to record these details also and, as these projects have a way of developing, my research has continued to expand to include men from the area who served in other theatres of war such as the Korean War, the Boer War and the Napoleonic wars. S! o that is roughly how I got to where I am today. My research continues on all fronts. Now that I know your interest I will keep a lookout for records of any Irwins from the Tandragee area that I may come across and will forward you the details. Thank you once more for your most helpful response and good luck with your own research. Regards Richard Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
