Hello Jim: Sorry about that - it was a general inquiry to see if anyone had access to info. My ancestor was born about 1780 - he married in 1822 (I think I may have said 1824 on my original query) and his parents (if they are infact HIS parents) died in 1822). Because it all happened prior to civil registration I am having the darndest time finding records. Also, they came to Canada in 1834, so again before many published records. The surname I am searching is BLAIR. Many thanks for reminding me what SHOULD be included in a query. Tara and the Curse The decline of the site as a cult centre is probably reflected in the episode in the Life of St Rúadán of Lorrha [521AD-584AD Co. Tipperary] descendant of a Royal Druidic family of Munster. During his years as a zealot Christian he was appointed as a Bishop as were all the sons of Druid Chieftains at the time under Patrick and to make up for his pagan ancestors in a fit of assigned contrition in which he cursed Tara and its high king, Diarmait mac Cerbaill in order to transfer the "seat of power" from Tara to his recently constructed Monastery nearby (Plummer 1910 (II), 245-9; 1922 (I), 88-90). The legend as to Tara's fate and its halls and monuments as having been deserted after the "curse" after 564AD is of comparative late origin to serve an ecclesiastical purpose for conversion and suppression of the local Celtic population. This is easily contradicted by a Druid Feis which continued to be held in and around the "monuments" of Tara until 867AD. St. Ruadhan's hand [read relic of veneration for the pagani] was preserved in a silver shrine at Lorrha until "the great vandalism of the Reformation". The parish church of Lorrah "adjoined" in order t6o make venerable to an ancient Druid oratory [promontory] which may be that of Ruadhan, son of the Druid, now Bishop. So once again we have an arm wrestling match between the Ard Ri Cerbaill and the recent convert to Christianity Ruadhan, our Munster boy, at the Hills of Tara. To this the Republic has added a bulldozer. So then do we accept this "bull"..hell no .. All praise the conquering hero Diamait mac Cerbaill Ard Ri of Tara and all Ireland and their ghosts .. It would be nice when anyone does a posting on this or anyother list if they would include a time frame. Somtimes one of us may be able to help. Usually when I see an e-mail without dates I just delete it and I know that many others do the same thing. Hello Is there a website please for the Tithe Applotments & Griffiths for Armagh please. Possibly Lurgan or Shankill I am searching for. Thank you Joan
Hello Listers: Query 1: I'm very near, I think, to finding my family. Is there anyone on the list who actually lives in Armagh, near enough to the Rich Hill area to do me a very big favour? I have the name of a house, and an old map and I would love it if someone could take a drive and see if that house is still there, and if so snap a photo for me. If such a person is on this list please be in touch off-list and I will give you the directions I have and hopefully you can translate that into modern road directions. My e-mail address is: sher.leetooze@3web.net Query 2: Does anyone on the list have access to Methodist records for the Rich Hill area - my ancestors may have been married in the Rich Hill Meth. church and some are likely buried in the Rich Hill Meth. cemetery, if there is such a thing. I doubt the C of I would let a Methodist be buried in THEIR churchyard!!! Anyway, looking forward to any replies that may come my way - and thanks for your assistance. Ah yes ... the famous Irish Clan of Hu ..... sorry just my Irish sense of humour ... Absolutely Julie ... the digital form of the 1901 Census [and 1911 for Dublin] will cover ALL of Ireland from Cork to Derry as the Census was taken in 1901. The Republic which covers only the southern portion of Ireland [Connacht-Munster-Leinster] south of our most ancient Ulster did not appear until after 1922 to which they added a couple more counties. It was also part of the deal with the Canadian government [Freedom of Information Act] which believes, as do our American cousins, that ALL Census records are free to all comers. After all it is THEIR records that we are accessing. Should be available at the very latest by November. That and the new complete Journal of the Memorials to the Dead, also covering all Irish cemeteries with legible headstones from 1890 to 1914 [again Cork to Derry] from Eneclann by the same period will keep us all busy for years to come. The Eneclann CD will have to be purchased ... well worth the dollars ...... Hello, all. Having visited the GRONI's web site at: http://www.groni.gov.uk/ index.htm ... the "Historical Records" section states that the office in Belfast holds registers of births and deaths from 1 January 1864 and of marriages from 1 January 1922. Marriage registers from 1 April 1845 are held at District Registrars' offices. What isn't clear is, do the historical records for the period 1845-1922 pertain to all 32 counties of Ireland or only to the six counties that now constitute Northern Ireland? Does one of the subscribers to NIR-ARMAGH know? I visited the office in 2003 and conducted searches there but, as my searches were confined to counties Armagh, Derry and Tyrone, I don't know the answer to this one.
