Not sure if you are aware but Alexander Walker famous British film critic was born in Portadown on 22/03/1930 Date of death 15/07/2003 (London, England). Perhaps he is a relative? I am not related. My father was born in Portadown in 1912 and I seem to remember him saying that he had taught Alexander at some point. Google him! In the census, they counted all individuals who lived under a roof, not concerning themselves, especially, with family connections, so boarders are shown as residing at the same address. During the depression, in the US, my grandfather, who was moderately well-to-do, by the standards of that era, would often take in short-term boarders in exchange for handyman work. As a result, the census shows many non-Purcells at his address. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have only found very limited information about them, and, I suspect, the names are quite common in the region and era. I know that Charles William was, at times, in the linen trade, as a salesman, though he may have spent some time in the 1910's as a house painter. He came to the United States in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, married Alice Watson and lived in San Francisco. His father, Robert, lived with them in 1910, also in San Francisco. Beyond this, of Robert, I know nothing. As an aside, my parents held the Donovan family Bible for their lives, and, I believe, that it was connected with these Walkers, but how, I do not know. Hello I've just been going through the Connors Genealogy site and in the marriages came across the following entry. Subject: [ARMAGH] Births 1904 (2) Lurgan, Portadown, Portadown, Lurgan, Co Armagh 14 Mar 1904, 20 Bann St, Portadown Gertrude Richard ELLIOTT, 20 Bann St, Portadown, labourer Jane Elliott formerly STURGEON Richard Elliott, father, 20 Bann St, Portadown, 8 Apr 1904 Would anyone have any connections to this family please. As the christian name Richard appears as the father's name and I am searching a Richard ELLIOTT/ELLIOT in Armagh, Cty. Armagh and as I've not been able to find too many Richard's I was hoping I may have a connection to this line. So far I've only been able to find my great grandmother, Mary Ann ELLIOTT who married Alexander STUART in 1872 in Victoria, Australia. On her marriage record her parents were shown as Richard ELLIOT/ELLIOTT, farmer and Mary CARBERY. Thank you for taking the time to read my request. Joan, NSW, Australia

My gggrandfather, James Hughes, probably left Co. Armagh about 1837. He was in Stockport, England, by 1842. I am not sure if he lived somewhere else in England at first or not. It is likely, since we can't find the birth of his oldest daughter in Stockport. I am wondering if there was anything in the late 1830's that might have prompted James to emigrate. There is a family story that he was studying medicine (probably an apprenticeship) and had to give that up when he emigrated. That would indicate an emigration that had some cause. It might simply have been that there was not enough room for all of the family to be in one small dwelling. Thanks for any insight. Jan janfortado@comcast.net
