    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RonaldDale100 Surnames: Furseman, Crossland Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/4127.1.1.4.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Debbie, This all makes sense given the movements of the regiments that you have outlined. The 46th Regiment was in Inda from 1817 but show up back in England in 1833. In 1837 they shipped off from Ireland to Gibraltar and then on to the West Indies in 1842. They were in Canada from 1845 to 1848 at which time they shipped back to England. They remained in England until 1854 when the regiment shipped off to the Crimean War. The 84th had been in Asia from 1842 through 1857 after which they returned to England. The 11th were in Canada in 1839, returning to England (and Ireland) until 1845 when they shipped off to Australia for the next 14 years. During the 19th century, roughly 12% of the soldiers on foreign service were permitted to have their wives and children in barracks. The family could draw rations. Children were allowed "on the strength" until 14 years of age at which time they were considered "old enough to shift for themselves." Widows could not remain on the strength but would be provided with the first available transport back to the parish in which the husband enlisted. In a number of cases, widows remarried to another soldier very soon after the funeral to avoid being shipped back to Britain. Soldiers had to have permission to marry from their commanding officer. Otherwise, there was no hope of the wife receiving shelter, rations or transportation if the regiment was shipped to another posting. Marriages and subsequent baptisms were normally done in the parish in which the regiment was stationed. Pay lists still exist for a number of regiments but these give little more than a soldier's name, rank, company and where exactly he was when paid. Unfortunately many of the attestation papers and other records, once stored in the War Office files, were destroyed in the late 19th century by a clerk with fetish for tidy storage areas. If the soldier received a pension, then his enlistment and attestation papers along with his record of service were shipped to the Pensioners Hospital and those records have been preserved and are in the PRO in Kew. The names Furseman (and variations) and Frederick Crossland are not in the PRO on-line catalogue for these records but that catalogue index is not complete--not all names have been added to that index. There is a complete index of Pension records that was put on microfilm. You can order that film through your nearest LDS Family History centre. That might be a logical next step in your research. 1. [ARMAGH] Faron , McCann
    2. Jane Coopman
    3. My great great grandparents were Francis Faron( Farron) and Ellen McCann. They are from Armagh and I have reason to believe they came from Tandragee. Ellen was born about 1806 and is now buried at st. James Catholis Cemetery in Colgan Ontario, which is Simcoe County. On the headstone it states that she is the wife of Francis Faron. Their son James is buried alongside of her. Does anyone know anything about these people Thank you.

In 1851 she is with her husband Frederick Crossland at the Barracks in Leeds (Fred was in the 46th and I have the documents on this - he was later in the 84th and I do not have any documents about that) In 1851 Sophia is listed as being born Devonport. I checked the 1841 census for Sophia in Devonport and could not locate her but did find 2 Fursemans aged 20 in the 11th regiment. As I can not find Sophia Furseman in england in 1841 and she married Fred at some point before 1844 when they have a child in Barbadoes I feel it likely she may have been with her father ( if he was a soldier as she claimed) . Any suggestions for further research welcome. thanks for any help or direction debbie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It gives the officer's rank, regiment and date of last commission. Once you have the regiment you can check to see if the Records of the Services of Officers are still extant for that particular regiment. The LDS people have a fair collection of records and may have the Army List for 1783 on microfilm. I have several volumes of the army list but they are for a later period, after 1810. Do you know approximately when Frank (I assume Francis) Patton died? Ron Let me know how you make out. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. All the information I have about him is that in 1783 he was a captain in the British Army. He was married to Anne Thompson from Armagh. She was my Great-Great-Great Grandmother. According to my family records she is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn NY. Anne Thompson Patton got remarried after Frank Patton died to James Early. At some point they must have been in America but their daughter Ellen Early got married in Armagh to John Gribben. Then their daughter Mary Gribben, came to America and got married in New York City to Patrick Loughran. Basically, I am trying to find out if Frank Patton was in America for the revolution or if Anne and Frank came to America later on?? Did Anne marry James Early in America or in Ireland?? Did THEY come to America? At what point did the Early family go back to Ireland- since their Anne died here in America and their daughter married in Ireland. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
