Do any of these fit your family ? I believe you were talking to Helen E. just recently, she is in our McKee Tree !!! George, born ca 1782,(the right age for the Napoleonic wars) arrived in New Brunswick, Canada abt 1816 with son, William b. 1815. Immigration records dated 1846 for William when he moved to Maine give only Armagh as his birthplace. I have not been able to find them in Armagh records. The name is more common in Down and Antrim. 2. Dawn Matheson
    3. Hello Ron, Thanks for your reply re George LAVERTY. I am just guessing that he might have been a soldier. George, born ca 1782, arrived in New Brunswick, Canada abt 1816 with son, William b. 1815. Immigration records dated 1846 for William when he moved to Maine give only Armagh as his birthplace. I have not been able to find them in Armagh records. The name is more common in Down and Antrim. I have seen a listing for a John Laverty who served with the Royal West India Rangers which was disbanded. In 1819, 600 of these men arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick. They were offered land in NB or £10. cash. Unfortunately John took the cash or I might have been able to check NB records for him. I hope there are other researchers looking for this elusive LAVERTY family. He had been an officer and courtmartialled and sentenced to deportation for striking a fellow officer. best wishes, Nicola Jennings >

    3. Hi Ron, John or James WHITING was with the 11th Foot Regiment and was garrisoned in Australia from 1845. The 1841 UK Census shows him stationed at George's Square Barracks in Devonport. He next shows up in Australia in 1845 arriving on the "Ratcliffe". This ship had collected convicts from Dublin and Kingstone in Ireland before coming onto Australia. I've been able to view Muster Books and Payroll Lists for his time of service here in Australia but have still not been able to find anything else about his service. I've searched and searched the National Archives database and can find no sign of him. Muster Books and Payroll Lists show him to be a Corporal by the time he arrived in Australia, and his marriage certificate of 1850 states he was a Sergeant. I would like to find enlistment papers, service records, pension records - anything at all really - but haven't had any success to date. Do any of the records list John or James WHITING?? Thanks for your time, Vicki Strickland Melbourne, Australia

Author: RonaldDale100 Surnames: Crossland Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/4127.1.1.4.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I had a look at the 1851 census at lunch and the entries for the Crossland children fit very well with the postings for the 46th Regiment. May Anne as born in Berbice, West Indies and was 7 years old. The Regiment embarked at Gibraltar for Barbadoes on January 20, 1842, arriving on February 25. On Jan 15, 1843, the Grenadier company of the regiment was stationed at Berbice where they suffered very severely from yellow fever. In October 1844, the Grenadiers joined the rest of the regiment at St Vincent. Therefore, since Mary Anne was born in Berbice, Francis must have been in the Grenadier company which was normally about 60-80 men in number. >From the census again, we see William born in Canada at "La Bruri." There is no such place. However, the regiment left the West Indies on Feb 23, 1845 and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia within two days. In July 1845 they boarded a troop ship to take them to Canada East (Quebec)and then a steamer from Quebec City to Montreal where they arrived on July 23. They then went into barracks at La Prairie near Montreal. They left La Prairie (you can see how it could be sounded as La Bruri) On October 9, 1846, to sail to Kingston, Canada West (Ontario). This stay at La Prairie fits with William's age from the census. Finally in September 1847, the Regiment sailed back to Quebec and on to Nova Scotia in October. They were back in England in July, 1848 and remained in Liverpoop from then to April 1850 when they moved to Hull. The period in Liverpool explains George's birth there. They were in Ireland from July 1852 to May 1854.By September 1854 the regiment was on the way to fight in the Crimean War. They suffered heavy casualties there and finally returned to England in August 1856. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. When the certificate arrives I will post the details of parents, place of birth etc as she is just listed as being born Ireland on the census. 3. Hello, You are right. That is their other son. He went from Ontario to Kansas and then back again. I did not see his grave at Colgan but it might be there. I keep wondering if Ellen came to Canada with her children and no husband or if he died here in Ontario. Perhaps he is also at colgan. Then again he might have died enroute to Ontario. I have been trying to find him for at least 6 years.

Several of the Cornetts joined the Royal Irish Constabulary in Armagh and I found those records. From family stories I was told that there were some who joined the army, but I have no proof of it. I thought it was worth checking. Mary Joan Cornett Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
