Dottie, Try these sites. I think I descend from James Callison's sister, Rebecca, who married James Haddock. Let me know if you have problems. Tommy Bryant Birmingham, Alabama _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~markfreeman/callanth.html_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~markfreeman/callanth.html) _http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CALLISON/2005-03/1110685743_ (http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CALLISON/2005-03/1110685743) _http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?quaker::callison::173.html _ (http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?quaker::callison::173.html) Trying to find when the Callisons came to Ulster and from where. There were no Callison or Wethereld names in the 1630 Muster Roll or the Hearth Rolls of 1666 which showed a majority of native Irish - surprising when Cromwell is supposed to have driven them out after the 1641 rebellion. After the Williamite wars, the lands of those Irish who had supported James II were confiscated and re-let to Protestant settlers. The Test Act of 1704, discriminating against Presbyterians, discouraged the Lowland Scots, who were mostly of that persuasion, from going to Ireland during the reign of Queen Anne but in the 1720's they flocked to Ulster outnumbering the Episcopal Church members. Most came from Ayrshire, Galloway and Kirkcudbrightshire and the Callisons may have come from there as later evidence suggests that they were Presbyterians. Anthony Callison may have been converted to the Quaker faith on his marriage to Abagail Wethereld on Apr.30, 1734. Among the witnesses were William and Luke Callison while the Wetherelds were represented by William, Joseph, John and Sarah. A list of leaseholders in 1738 includes the names of William, Luke, Anthony and Ann Callison. Another list in 1759 shows William, Anthony and James Callison while a further list in 1772 shows only William and Anthony Callison. When Abagail, daughter of Anthony married John Mitton on Jan.21, 1773, Anthony only was present which indicates that William may have died that year. Anthony died in June 1779 in the townland of Mullalelish. his will which had been made exactly a year earlier, was the subject of several discussions in the monthly meetings of the Quakers which dragged on for about a year. Some objections were made to the bequests to his four daughters and their husbands. No details can be gathered in the recorded minutes but the other Callisons appear to have been so annoyed that they left the congregation. Subsequent records of the family are found in Presbyterian church. It would appear that a William Callison may have been a brother of Anthony born 1709, Margaret born 1720 and James born 1721. James married Isabella (surname unknown) and emigrated to America, living first in Albemarle Co.,Virginia before moving to Augusta Co.,Virginia about 1748. His children . . Jane born 1743, Elenor 1744, Mary 1745, John 1746 and Isabella 1747 were born in Albemarle Co. It is recorded that on Feb.28, 1749 James acquired a total of 556 acres of land, part of the Beverly Manor patent (near the present town of Greenville, Virginia. James attended the North Mountain Presbyterian Church and is on record in the Hanover Presbytery as having entered a complaint against the Rev. Brown over him refusing to baptize one of the Callison children because James was 'Old Light' and the minister had 'New Light' beliefs. The differences need not be explained now but it reinforces the view that James' origins were Lowland Scots as only they were so particular about their type of worship. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
Dottie, your note made me laugh! I did find at the IGI, the entry for the marriage of James Callison & Isabella Umn, in a record submitted by a member of the church. That surname for Isabella seems quite strange. The dates in your note are all mixed up, but am assuming you mean the 1700s and not the 1800s in all cases. The problem you face is that very few parish registers from that time frame have survived, so am not sure if you'll ever be able to find out any additional information. On Robert and Frances Wedding Certificate, Richard is noted as a Farmer as is Frances' father Thomas. Frances was residing at the town of Croghrim at the time of her marriage and Robert from the town of Lisblake so it was probably in these townships that the fathers had their farms. I can not find any further information on Richard Irwin or anymore family members. It is also noted on the wedding certificate that Robert was a retired policeman. Hi: My wife's maiden name is McMurray. Her family left Ireland, I believe, about 1841 and moved to Scotland. They were in Montrose in the early 1840s (a.marriage certificate). The some of them, including her grandparents, moved to Canada about 1890. Could there be a connection? Hello. I have been stuck for some time while looking for my HART ancestors. This is what I know: Samuel HART (b. abt. 1815 in Ireland, possibly Cavan in Co. Armagh) and Rebecca KELLY (b. abt. 1813) were married in Clare Church (I believe it is/was Presbyterian), Ballyshiel, Co. Armagh, on March 15, 1840 (one family memory has that marriage date as February 2, 1840), and they left soon after to emigrate to Canada. Witnesses to their marriage were William and Lucinda Kelly and William Douglas. In Canada, they built a log home in Bishop's Mills, Ontario, Canada and lived there. They had eight children: Maurice b. Dec 25, 1840 (and perhaps the reason for leaving Ireland???), James b. January 6, 1842, Martha Jane b. 1844, Nancy b. 1848, Anna Bella b. abt. 1853, John b. abt. 1856, and Jane b. unknown and Samuel b. unknown.. I have no information about Samuel HART's family -- and would love to know his parents names and dates, grandparents if possible, and any siblings he had. From somewhere I picked up that Samuel Hart's father was also called Samuel Hart and was born about 1800, but I am not sure that is reliable. Samuel Hart died about 1866 in Bishop's Mills, Ontario, Canada. Rebecca Kelly was the youngest of four girls. Her parents were James Kelly (b. 1787, d. between October 28, 1831 and April 23, 1839, as he was present for the weddings of some of his daughters but not all). James' wife might have been called Jane (don't know for sure, and don't have her maiden name nor her dates). James and poss. Jane were married in 1800. Their children were: Anna Bella Kelly, b. abt. 1800, m. John Caughey January 17, 1820 in Clare Church, Co. Armagh, Jane Kelly b. abt 1800, m. David Jeffrey October 29, 1831, same Clare Church, Mary Kelly b. ?, m. James McHenry April 23, 1839 in the same Clare Church, and the fourth child was Rebecca Kelly. I do not have information about james Kelly's parents or siblings. If you could find anything about the Hart family, I would be most thankful. There were family memories about "Cavan" and I looked for a long time in Co. Cavan, but could find nothing that matched. Then I learned that Samuel Hart married Rebecca Kelly in Clare, Co. Armagh, so I looked for a Cavan in Co. Armagh, and I found many Harts. Is this Cavan a township. I have tried to contact the Clare Church to ask for the marriage registration information, but have had no response. That would be one thing I would love to have, along with any information of Samuel Hart's family. Many thanks for any information you can provide. I have been stuck for years at this point, and would dearly appreciate anything to set me on a path of more searching. These volumes are held on open shelves at the PRONI in Belfast. I don't know if this printed work has been distributed elsewhere, but the staff at the PRONI may know. www.proni.gov.uk Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Give me a few details etc and I'll try ringing for you if you wish. NI people in general know little of their family before about 1900 especially many in belfast. This is because many families moved to the city with the industrial revolution and lost track of their original location. It really depends on the date I'm willing to give it a try. I live in Ballydugan/Knocknamuckley were a lot of Dynes hailed from and any I know of were/are Protestant. I have found though through my own research that marraiges between the denominations were more common than one would have thought given the political history of this country!!! I hope the clergyman can accomodate us next week. I 'll be in touch. My McMurray family(mum's maiden name) were married into the dynes family somewhere along the line as the name Dynes was used as a christian name (on more than one occasion)but as people rarely married outside of the neighboring townland due to restrictive travel it is not surprising that so many of the names in one townland are intertwined. It will be very exciting to hear what you find! All the best, Gail Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The office has copies of the registers. It is only open weekday mornings to my knowledge. For Gail, I was on the phone earlier with a clergyman from the Roman Catholic faith from the parish of Seagoe(Derrymacash church, Aghacommon)To my knowledge it is the mother church of Seagoe parish for the Catholic faith or at anyrate it was in the 1800's. I've to ring him on Monday for an appointment to see his records. Most of my relatives are in the C of I records which I got in the Iish research Library in Armagh City and in the office mentioned above but I have to check out some burial details in the chapel in Aghacommon. Were your Dynes connections C of I or RC? I noticed in a previos post you had on the net (perhaps not this site) that you mentioned a Valentine and other siblings of Mary Jane. The News surname does sound as if it is RC and not C of I. If they came from Silverwood townland (there are 3 News' listed as living in Silverwood on the griffiths valuation in 1864)I would suspect that they would be found in the RC records. Mail me if you want and I will see what I can d! o to help. This is a busy time of year kids returning to school etc... but I hope to go to this Chapel next week if the priest permits it.
