> Hello Pauline, Thank you for your prompt response. My query is not exactly genealogical, but more about where we might stay (holiday cottage) somewhere close to Portadown. Is there a nice market town or small village which would give good access to Armagh and surrounds - probably close, but not necessarily in, Portadown. I have sourced accommodation but really do not know the places they are referring to, so finding it difficult to make a decision. Is there a time of year, when the area should be avoided? Are there any 'events' we could time our stay around? If we do need to consult records etc. should we start in Dublin or Belfast? I have sent this to the List, as others may be interested in planning a visit as well. Hi Just looking at those two family names makes me immediately identify the area of Armagh as Tartaraghan Parish, an area known as The Birches in north west Armagh. Hi Anne I dont think those church registers are available on-line. They are open to the public at PRONI (Belfast). I feel sure some other Hamptons have maybe looked at them already and will get in touch. I shall check out the graveyard inscriptions for you in the next few days and get back to you on this Pauline www.irishhomesteads.com
My wife and I had the pleasure of visitng Armagh/Tyrone this past fall, and really enjoyed it. We visited from Moira to Moyallan in Down, Armagh, and Richhill and Charlemont/Grange and Dungannon in Tyrone, doing the genealogy bit. Then we traveled to South And West Ireland to do the tourist run. Did not see anything prettier than Armagh/Tyrone. I really want to go back. Bob-Sinton.com has a wealth of information and townland maps for most of Armagh. It is weighted heavily to Quaker data, which was helpful to me, but the townland maps are very helpful. Bed and breakfast facilities are everywhere, although we stayed in a motor hotel in Tyrone. Enjoy yourself. If I can answer specifics, will be glad to try. If you rent a car, make sure you get a small sedan, if apropriate. That's what I reserved, but when we got there, they stuck us with a Volvo SUV. Was a good car, but too big and too rough for the roads. Anne One branch of my family descended from a long line of Hamptons in Anglesey, Wales. A lot can be found about them in the book Pedigrees of Anglesey ...., by John Edwards Griffith, 1914, a reference to which is here: http://openlibrary.org/b/OL6574006M/Pedigrees_of_Anglesey_and_Carnarvonshire _families It is a while since I have looked into this but I seem to recall that the Hampton family originated in Lancashire back in about the 1300s and was given land in Anglesey by one of the long-ago kings. The same possibly applied to another branch of the same family in Ireland. Just a thought. Henry Hampton - my great grandfather - is shown in the Kilmore Parish records as having been baptised by John and Jane Hampton of Ballywilly on 19th October, 1837. Henry came to New Zealand in 1865 and his death certificate in 1910 shows that his father was John and mother unknown. I'm wondering if his mother Jane Hampton died when Henry was quite young. Thomas Are you aware the McGuinness family name was originally McCreesh? I found in 1835 in Killeavy Parish Tithe Applotment Books many McCreesh's up in that area including Patrick's in Killean (Killeen), Stephen in Killean, Thomas in Adavoyle, Lawrence in Clonlum and several others in Clonlum which border onto Aghayallogue. Hi Thomas The place is Ayallogue/Aghayallogue spelt all sorts of various ways. It is in Killevy/Killeavy Parish south Armagh, . The family name McGuinness/McGinnis is quite common there and I have info on lots of them around Jonesborough in the townlands of Cloghinny, Lower Foughil, Jonesborough etc. Unfortunately none of these McGinnis have McConville connections. Killeavy Church registers go back until 1832 and easy enough to read. I am a McConville and am trying to find out more about them in the Killeavy area. A friend of mine will email you later on and may be of much more help.
