    1. [ARMAGH] Quaker Research in Ireland
    2. Chris Shearer Cooper
    3. I'm researching my great(6)-grandfather Thomas Jacob(s), and I just stumbled upon this information in the 1710 minutes of the Chester Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania: "Thomas Jacob produced a certificate from Friends in Cork, Ireland and one from Darby where he resided most since he came into these parts. Thomas Jacob of Providence Meeting requested a certificate to Newark Monthly Meeting to marry Mary Robinson, dau. of George Robinson." Notes: . Darby is just another town in Pennsylvania . Newark is not the more well-known Newark, NJ but rather Newark, DE where Mary Robinson was from and where they got married . "Providence Meeting" is held in Media, Pennsylvania, about 6 miles north of Chester This raises a few questions in my mind, I'm hoping folks with more experience doing Quaker research can help me . 1) What's "a certificate"? My Google searching keeps turning up wedding certificates, which don't make sense here. It's some sort of "certificate of good standing" or "certificate of moral behavior" or something? 2) Should I be worried that these two sentences could be interpreted to refer to two different people named Thomas Jacob? One "Thomas Jacob" and one "Thomas Jacob of Providence Meeting"? Or is that just the way they wrote these minutes back then? 3) If Thomas is "of Providence Meeting", why is he requesting a certificate from Chester? Why wouldn't he request the certificate from Providence? And then the most important question . 4) Do the records still exist from Cork from that timeframe (probably 1690-1710)? 5) If so, what is the best way for someone from the USA to search those records? 6) Have they been indexed? Thanks! Chris

But what I find most outstanding about your family is the name Foy, in relation to where they come from. Within a few hundred yards, certainly less than a mile, are townlands Foy Beg and Foy More. There is also a Foy Road and a Foy Lane. I would have thought that these were ancient Irish words for some sort of topography. Over Foy Road is Moy Beg, another townland. I think it would be interesting to consider where your family's name came from. By the way, in Griffiths, your family is spelt Flaville, and in the townland were George, Thomas and William. All best, Bill. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It would be nice if I could figure out if we are related to the Garvey priests. However, I am sure that my grandfather Garvey (1883-1973) would have known about that connection and talked about it frequently. The family would have been proud to be related to priests. It is possible that they did not know about the connection. My great-grandfather, Hugh Garvey, was born in 1849 in Newtownhamilton, County Armagh, to Bernard Garvey and Sarah Quigley Garvey. They emigrated about 1850 and had two more children in upstate New York or possibly Ontario. They later settled in western Pennsylvania and were connected to the railroads, not mining as was possibly another Hugh Garvey. We do not know any other Irish connections to Bernard Garvey, and that is what I had hoped to find some day. Could he somehow be related to your "Mary Garvey?" Perhaps they were cousins from Newtonhamilton? I do love the stories about Patrick and Hugh and the s! tory about the painting. It was generous of your family to give it to the seminary! That sounds like a "Garvey" thing to do. If you discover any other information from Garveys in Newtownhamilton, please think of me. I do have a cousin that has done some research, so I will send him your information. As far as I know, however, we can't "go back" as far as we would like in Ireland. Thank you for your response, and good luck to you in your research and your son with his film. Brigid Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Have any of you considered entering your deceased ancesters into the Find A Grave Website Ireland or any of the other Find A Grave websites? Whe I checked the Ireland site two days ago, there were only 900+ entries for Ireland. None for County Armagh. I added a relation yesterday to the County Armagh website. There are lots of nice people who go through cemeteries and take pictures of headstones and then upload the picture and information into the website. Maybe you will find someone you are looking for. I have not been able to find out anything on that side of the Atlantic. I will just run this one by you...and if anyone knows anything, perhaps they will reply. My grt. grt. grandfather was named Thomas Wilson. He was born abt. 1827 somewhere in Northern Ireland, perhaps Belfast. He married Isabella Cosgrave. She was born about 1836. We believe we found a marriage record on Family Search that says they were married in Belfast, Ireland. They settled in Portadown, Ireland. Thomas was a railroad porter. He died in Sept.of 1873 at the age of 46. He and Isabella had five daughters that survived him and possibly two other children that passed away at a young age. Their daughters names were Annie, Margaret, Isabella, Elizabeth and Sarah Jane. Sometime from 1885 to 1890...Isabella and the girls emigrated to America. I believe that several of them came at diffent times.Elizabeth was my grt. grandmother, so I have known of her. It ! took me seven years of researching to finally find the resting place of my grt. grt. grandmother Isabella, her daughter Annie, Margaret, Isabella and Sarah Jane. The family all settled in Philadelphia, Pa. They are all buried in and around that area. Isabella (Cosgrave) Wilson , died on June 19, 1892. I would love to find out about their life in Ireland. If any of these Wilson's sound familiar to anyone, or you have any idea where to look for records of them, I would appreciate hearing from you. Brad..I too would be interested in knowing if hiring someone was worth the cost to you, and if you were satisfied with them, perhaps you would be willing to share their name with me. I do not know where Portadown is in regards to the area you researched. I also have two pictures from Ireland...that I can't identify the people in them. Do not know if they are family or friend. Do you know of any place to post them..so that people in Ireland would be able to view them? You can contact me at: [email protected] Thanks, Gail Pepper Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ftraynor11 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.arm.general/9463.1.1.3.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Brigid, My family (wife Maureen McDevitt) and sons Ryan and Sean are from suburban Philadelphia in a little town called Yardley,PA. The town is very close to where George Washington crossed the Delaware River and attacked the Germans in Trenton NJ who were fighting for the British when we had our little rebellion over here. Where are you and your people from ? I am currently trying to get more on the Garvey boys who came to Philadelphia where they all became priests.Do you know anything about them? Some material is posted on ancestry Garvey page. My grandmother who I never met(died in '45) was Bridget Quinn. He Mom was Mary Garvey, sister of Patrick and Hugh etc the priests. Those priests gave Bridget work when she first came to America, they were all at Mt St Mary's Seminary in various jobs when she came across and landed not in NYC but Baltimore. Then the whole crew went to Philly and St Charles Borromeo Seminary where Patrick was the rector. My youngest son Sean (23) is a filmmaker. He studied film at Temple University where he graduated last May. He has been making films since grade school. He too has an interest in the Garvey priests. He plans to see the Thomas Eakin's portrait of Msg Patrick Garvey in the private gallery at St Charles Seminary here in Philly. The portrait as you know was painted by Eakins and given to Patrick who thought it was too stern looking and hid it under his bed. It then went to my grandmother Bridget Quinn Traynor who put it under her bed because it scared her six children. Bridget died in 1945,her husband Owen Traynor(from Cullyhanna also but the two met in Philly) apparently gave the painting to a Garvey nephew, also a priest who locked it in a closet at his rectory and it was found after his death and given back to my grandfather Owen who died shortly after. My mother recalls that at Owen's wake the painting was discussed and the family decided to give it to St Charles Seminary where it hangs today. This link will take you to the book about Eakins where Dr Patrick J Garvey is mentioned and how Eakins wished for the painting to be recovered and hung at the seminary...... http://books.google.com/books?id=0ZM7O5neeZgC&pg=PA472&lpg=PA472&dq=thomas eakins and patrick j garvey&source=bl&ots=bKI-XH9DV-&sig=bZe0Qlg2z-jxx-DGlIMMq53qjxo&hl=en&ei=mGWdS9zEOIH58Ab9lI38DQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CA8Q6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=&f=false Now the cousins who are my age, late 50's to early 60's wish they had kept the painting,we probably could have sold it and purchased a family beach house! The mystery, the Garvey brothers and cousins who all served the church in Md and Pa serve as a compelling story that would be nice to tell. If Hugh Garvey came here first and worked in the mines to pay for his brothers to come across and study that is a powerful story that speaks volumes about our family values. Sean wants to do a film about all this called "Hiding Garvey" if he can get funding to finance his efforts. He wants to draw up a proposal to submit to the Connelly Foundation in Philadelphia which gives grants to Catholic organizations and causes in the Philadelphia area. 3. Hi Brigid Is this the Hugh Garvey who was born February 1850 to Bryan Garvey and Sarah Quigly? I am from Forkhill Parish. The boundary of this parish is close to Netownhamilton and Bernard/Bryan Garvey is very common here especially in an area known as Dorsey/Dorsy as is Quigly. Is it your family who are rlated to the Garvey priests?
