Just a thought: the names Wholly and similar (in variant spellings) are mostly (in my experience) pronounced like HOOLEY, and I expect that they are mostly versions of the name that we know in that spelling (an Irish name). Names like Wiley, Whiley, etc. are probably quite different and more likely to be English in origin. Ted Marr
