Can anyone advise me on marriage licences in 1900 in Ireland please? I have searched for the marriage of my grandparents Elizabeth Bowden and William Moore for many years now without success. I am beginning to think that they may have married on board a ship as my grandmother did go to NZ in 1891 and stayed for several years. I have been advised that to marry on board a ship one must have a marriage licence. Or if they got married in some small church in Ireland Should this be the case, where would I look for a copy of the marriage licence please? Any advise would be very gratefully received. Kindest Regards. Jean McCarthy nee Moore. Staffordshire, England. My own main names of interest: MOORE, (Ireland, Canada & Australia) BOWDEN, (Ireland, New Zealand, Tasmania & Australia) HAWTHORNE. (Ireland and Pennsylvania) In Co Down, Co Armagh & Co Antrim Ireland: McCALLISTER, McAULEY, FLINN, STRAIN, SPRATT, McCLENAGHAN & KENNEDY. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jeanmccarthy36/
Jean, you've checked - and you're wondering about Marriage licences now............ BUt, when you checked the various years, was it the Irish marriage indices you were checking and did you check the pages at teh back of any book (presumably films) for late registrations, mariages at sea etc? Marriages at sea - mariages in other countries - as far as I know, these are not on film - not even here in Ireland. To see what was said on any of those then you you ahave to purchase a full certificate. But - in theory, any person who married at sea, who was an Irish citizen in the time frame you are speaking of - well, that marriage was supposed to be registered in the civil books.
