    1. Ballycastle
    2. Janis Smith
    3. I'm new to this list and would like info on Ballycastle. I have seen no mention of this town in any messages. I am researching Charles Smith b-1844, son of William Smith & Martha Donnelly and Charles' wife Margaret McAuley b-1851 daughter of Archibald McAuley & Rosetta McNeil. Charles and Margaret were both born in Ballycastle. Since I have not seen it mention can I assume that it is a very small town? The very common name of Smith (also Charles & William) has been difficult to nail down. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Janis Smith Michigan, USA

    3. Pretoria, There are two resources that you can use to try and find out where Maxwell families were found in Antrim for the time frame you are interested in. The first, is the IGI - International Genealogical Index - you can search this on line at the family history org web site Jim McNamara passed the following URL's to another list IGI Information on using familysearch.org site to find IGI references: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/FindingBatchNos.html An article on the LDS FamilySearch (c) Website: Using The Batch Numbers: http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazfd/gazfd36.htm FAQs on IGI: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumberFAQs.htm The second resource available to you is not on-line, though some part of it may be on web sites. It's the Tithe Applotment Books - these are what we call a census substitute. They're a record of people leasing land - except it had to be good land, arable - bog was not included and then some parts of some parishes had excemptions, so, with the TAB's, you don't find as many names as you do with the Griffiths Evaluation in any parish. Alos, with the TAB's it tends to be the same names that come up over and over again, and then these people would have sub-leased, so those lessees are not named. Anyway, the TAB's can still give some idea of surname distribution in a parish. The names found in the Tithe Applotment Books for Ulster - or, at least the six counties of the north have been transcribed and are available on a CD. If you just search the net, I'm sure you will find somewhere that sells it. There is one other resource - and this one used to be on line, I'm not sure about now. Maybe someone else can help with my memory on this. Some part of the 1851 census for Antrim remains and the last URL that I have for that is this: http://www.rootsweb.com/~irish/igsi_published/cens-sub/ant5100.htm After that - you could try taking a look at the Griffiths Evaluation and that would tell you also where the surname was found in COunty Antrim but this would cover the 1860's and what you are really interested in is finding out where the surname was in the 1820's - and that's the time frame for the Tithe Applotment Books. 3. Hello all; I normally don't do this but, I joined Otherdays.com back in November of 2004. I have tried wit no success to get on and do some research but, it won't let me in. I even e-mailed them and they eventually had an Allan send me a message saying there was a problem but, things would be taken care of soon. NOT! I am wondering if anyone else has had this same problem and if they have, what can we do about this? I paid my fee but, have NEVER been able to use it. That certainly isn't fair nor is it good business. I would appreciate hearing from those who may have had the same problem, but please off the list so as not to take up space in the archives. and the site as some might have to pay for their time on the net.
